How is everyone doing and How is your Boo doing in this very cold weather?

 

My Asper and Vulgaris is TOAST! I think I will completely cut it down in a few months unless it’s not recommended

 

Where do the Florida Boo lovers and growers message each other? This list is almost dead

I've brought in some of my rare unpotted plants, but other than that it's tough love and the luck of having a fence and living in a neighborhood friendly to vegetation.  Some of the pots with less than optimal mass (smaller, less dirt, rootbound) are brown and will probably die.  I've kept most of the pots hydrated during the day.

Here in a relatively balmy ST. Pete, the lowest temp so far has been 36.5F - but tonight will be colder... since the current temps is 38F at high noon as i key this in.

 

For past freezes, I've waited until spring to cut off any dead culms from by B. vulgaris Vitatta.   The Gingatachloa atroviolacea has not seen a real freeze but defoliates considerably in any winter and grows right back in spring.  B.oldhamii has been almost indestructable.   The Psuedosasa japonica var. Tsutsumiana should be good to 20F.

 

Palms, crotons, and everything else is on its own.  I do water heavily before a freeze since water or mud has a higher specific heat than dry dirt; and drying desicating winds probably do more damage than just cold temps.

Not probably::  DEFINITELY....     

 

And we only got down to 11-13 this morning.   got all the way UP to 35, with full sun all day today.  It's already back down to  30ish, at our current 8:20 PM..   

        And by the way, our B. t. Kanapaha, is hangin in there, as well, as well as ONE cultivar of B. Oldhamii...    They will both lose some leaves, but will come back next spring..

Hi Ivan,

I haven't been on this forum much although I've known about it, but
recently I've been interested in finding a Florida forum for bamboo,
mainly clumpers. I am in Jacksonville and my Vulgaris are also
hurting. I usually have to cut them down and they grow back each year
and look great until the first freeze. Bummer. We're just a bit too
far north for a few of my favorite varieties.

Lemme know if you find a cool bamboo forum.
