Maple Ridge Neighborhood: (15th to 31st - Peoria to Riverside) We have seen an increase of car break-ins in the Maple Ridge area. It is probably occurring in other neighborhoods as well. This appears to be more organized than previous reports.
A group of 3-5 young men are walking the neighborhood streets checking car doors. If a door is unlocked they quickly rummage through the glove box, console and other compartments looking for valuables. They tend to take small electronics (including chargers) but leaving change. One witness saw this group being followed by a mid-sized silver SUV. Three men were walking up driveways checking cars. They returned to the SUV and drove off quickly when they were spotted. They have been seen at all hours of the night but typically on weekends. We have two recent reports of cars being stolen but we are not sure if this is the same group.
Please be on the lookout for this type of activity. Do not interfere and call the police immediately (911). Write down a tag number if you can see it from a safe distance.
Museum Neighborhood: (Peoria to Utica - 25th to 31st) 5/21/2013 - 8 pm a nicely dressed young man came to the door. Immediately said he lived in the neighborhood. He provided a common and believable last name for his parents. You may recall that this is the same approach the three guys used two years ago that said they were raising money for the TU Baseball team they would even reference the street their parents lived on to make it more believable. They were finally arrested for door to door solicitation scam.
The resident reports that he immediately started this fast-talking story about going to an internship at the BBC in London this summer. Asked if she knew what BBC stood for. Said his father said going door-to-door would build character. Complemented the resident on their car that was in the drive-way and the brand of watch on her wrist. He kept talking fast and spinning his head.
When she asked what he wanted, he pulled out a laminated magazine subscription pamphlet. When she declined, he pulled out another for ordering children's books. He said"even for someone who lives in the neighborhood....? She said "Yes." He became indignant and belligerent . She shut the door on him.
