Another person has been killed at a railway crossing without lights or arms
(John Waldner, MacGregor Manitoba, Sep 17). Isn't it time we replaced or
supplemented the rail crossing cross with either a skull and crossbones, or
a simple STOP sign?

It is a good idea.
The problem is that the cheapest way (both legally and in construction
costs) is to just close the crossing.
For instance, for some reason, why don't have pedestrian crossing at
every street that is bisected by the 417.

After-all --- everyone can drive a car to the nearest official
crossing, right?

Trains slow down and make plenty of noise at every crossing
and railway crossing signs are posted on roads in advance
just like any other hazard sign.
I am not willing to throw away more public money
in private car infrastructure or fruitless initiatives to cure stupidity.

Heartily agree with the sentiment iin general wrt to certain folks, but
i) have to consider others such as those with eg hearing
impairments and more limited vision (eg the elderly) and ii) it costs
even more every time someone get's schmucked by a train.
