Once every 3 years you get to have your most important say about your
city government and its priorities.

That day is upon us: Monday November 10 is municipal election voting day.
The polls are open from 10 AM until 8 PM.

As a cycling advocate since 1998 I have seen too many close votes at City
Council where the decision on approving half a million dollars for cycling
or voting out of existence an advisory committee that supported cycling
project, won or lost by _one single vote_.

My impression of the city council races and candidates this year is that
the situation is not going to change dramatically. It could get worse,
with councillors like Phil McNeely and Madeleine Meilleur having left city
council and needing to be replaced with someone as supportive. It's going
to be as important as ever to ensure that every candidate who cares about
sustainability, livable communities, and the environment gets elected.

Many races are likely to be close this year. Elections for city
councillors in Ottawa in the past 15 years have on at least one occasion,
come down to one single deciding vote.

So please make sure you get out and vote on Monday! Contact and encourage
those you know who care about these issues and cycling to vote for a
supportive candidate too. You don't want to be the person who didn't
bother voting for the supportive candidate, causing him or her to lose by
one vote, leading to important motions at city council failing time after
time for lack of one vote. Yours.

Brett
