Since 1996 Nepal has been plagued by a war between government
and Maoist forces. Human rights violations have been committed by
both sides and Nepali civilians have suffered the most as a result.
On February. 1, 2005 Nepal’s King dissolved the country’s parliament
and seized total control of the government. Following his coup
political leaders have been arrested, public demonstrations banned and
a massive crackdown on civil liberties has occurred. Under the King’s
direction the Nepalese Army’s war against Maoist forces has intensified
and many more innocent civilians have been killed.
