------------
A benefit to raise funds for Paul Smith's legal expenses
incurred in the lengthy police complaint process.
Paul was tasered and beat up at a demonstration in
May of 2003. In Nov. 2005, one Ottawa police officer was
convicted of excessive use of force.
In March 2006 he was sentenced to a reprimand.
The Police complaint system is broken. Ottawa police routinely
use harrassment and unwarranted force - and in some
cases, extreme violence - in carrying out their duties.
Then they investigate themselves if there are any complaints
against them.
Matt McGarvey, Paul's lawyer spent over 3 weeks working as legal council
on this case. The dozens of police officers that witnessed,
testified, observed
and wrote letters of commendation in defence of the 2 police officers
charged,
were all paid during many 'complaint hearing' appearances. To date Matt
has worked pro bono.
Come out and support our fight against police brutality.

War: first, one hopes to win; then one expects the enemy to lose;
then, one is satisfied that he too is suffering; in the end, one is
surprised that everyone has lost.
