This 55 minute documentary about the struggle of the Sipakapense-Mayan
people in San Marcos, Guatemala, for autonomy and locally controlled
development. It is presented by Rights Action, Halifax Initiative,
MiningWatch Canada, OPIRG, Café Justicia, Punto de Encuentro, PSAC,
GAPA, and maqex.com.
Glamis Gold - a Canadian-US mining company - is holding its annual
shareholders' meeting in Toronto on May 3. Glamis has made significant
profits for its shareholders, directors and investors, from its open
pit, cyanide-leaching mining operations in Guatemala and Honduras, at
the expense of the development needs and environmental well-being of the
local and Indigenous populations.
Five Northwestern Ontario First Nations have had a moratorium on mining
in their traditional territories since last October; in February,
Platinex Mining was kicked out of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (Big
Trout Lake First Nation). The moratorium covers the traditional
territories of Kitchenuhmaykoosib, Muskrat Dam, Wapekeka, Wawakapewin,
and Deer Lake First Nation in Nishnawbe Aski Nation territory.
