Every week I send two long letters to about sixty people.

One letter consists of all the new questions that I have received for
the Ask the Doctors web site during the past week.

The other letter consists of copies of all the doctors' answers that
have appeared on the web site durint the past week.

Both these letters go out to each of the sixty doctors.

I am doing this procedure through NCF at present and I have noticed that
their system is absolutely perfect for this purpose, but it is gradually
being changed and for all I know it might be removed.

I would feel more comfortable if I could use a system of mass mailing
witbin Flora and I have noticed that there is a Majordomo system
available here.

Could I use that system for my weekly mailings. I keep my list of
doctors current and accurate and the two mailings each week are
identical to all recipients.

If the Majordomo people charge for the service it would be out of the
question for me because Ask the Doctors is an entirely volunteer effort
with no funds at all.

Also, perhaps there is a more efficient method of doing these mailings.
I use both IGS and Resudox for access to the Internet, and FreeNet of
course. I could set up an alias on Freenet for these mailings if the
merge mail facility is removed, but I'm wondering if there is a better
solution.

Now the problem is in your hands I'll just proceed as I have been until
I hear from you. Thanks for being there.

Cheers
Rosaleen

For mailings where the people are identical, Majordomo would handle
this well. I will set this up if this is the most desirable option for you.

Is it also entirely possible to do this mailing directly from your
regular email software. I knew there was something I forgot to talk to
you about when I was last at your place, and alias lists was it.

Netscape Address Book:

A URL to read what Netscape themselves have to say would be the following:

http://home.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/3.0/handbook/docs/mnb.html#C12

What you want to do is create what they call a 'Mailing List'. This is
like a special named folder that would contain all the doctors names.
When you send an Email to the folder name ('doctors' might be a good name
to use), your Email would then be sent to all the doctors.

How to create:

Select under 'window' on your top menu, and choose 'Address book'.
Select under 'item' and choose 'Add user'.
A window will pop up with text areas titled 'Nick Name', Name, Email
address, and description.

Nick Name: This is the special name you want to call this person. If
you were doing one for me, you might type in 'russ' (without the quotes).

Name: The person's name. This is what shows up in the netscape 'to'
line to verify you typed things right. Be unique here. For me you might
type: Russell McOrmond

Email: Just as you might think. For me type: rus...@flora.org

Description: This is for your own notes to remember who is who. Type
whatever you wish.

When you hit 'OK' you will now have my name in a little list. The list
will look similar to what you are familiar with with bookmarks.

Add a second one the same way.

Now select 'add list' under 'item'. This time give it a Nick Name like
'doctors', a name like 'All the Doctors'.

When you select 'OK' then you will now have a new 'folder' called 'All
the Doctors'.

Use your mouse and drag and drop the 'Russell McOrmond' and the other
person into this folder. You have now created a 'mailing list'.

Now go to your Netscape Mail, and click on the To:Mail button. In the
Mail_To: field type in 'doctors'. When you then move to the next field,
it will say:

All the Doctors <doctors>

When you hit 'send' on this message, it will now be sent to all the
doctors.

Try it out - if you can't get it to work, let me know and we might be
able to get together some time and I can quickly show you. It's quite
easy to manage once you get the hang of it. You'll wonder how you ever
did without it!

>If the Majordomo people charge for the service it would be out of the

P.S. I am the 'majordomo person' at FLORA, so obviously there is not a
charge for mailing lists for FLORA related stuff ;-) I suspect you will
prefer to do things in Netscape as it would be easier for you to
personally manage the list (Drag-n-drop) than any system that would be
managed from remote.
