Dear Mr. Lanktree,

It seems to me that such streets would be prime candidates for measures to slow
traffic which would provide bicyclists with a more comfortable environment.

As well as providing sidewalk furniture, you should also consider eliminating parking
lanes and replace them with a wider traffic lane for cars and bicycles and a wider
sidewalk. A wide lane with no parking would be ideal to encourage cycling in and to the
area.

I think that shopping and restaurant streets areas like Wellington, Bank, or Elgin
Streets would be ideal for this treatment.

You should also touch base with Wilf Koppert of the TDM section, since such areas of
slower traffic and wide lanes would be good side junkets in the Bicycle Route network
planned.

re: Street Design Policy - Project Commencement

The City initiated preparation of a new Street Design Policy in April 2006. This policy
will focus on setting standards for the design of special streets within the City.

Criteria will be established to determine which streets warrant special design
treatment, such as, burial of hydro and telecommunication cables, decorative paving,
street trees, pedestrian streetlights, benches etc. It will also determine how and when
these improvements will be financed and how they will be maintained. The general
intent is to create a higher design standard for certain specific special streets in the
city.

The public can participate by reviewing and commenting on the draft policy through
public open house meetings to be held in the winter of 2007, which will be posted on
this site. The dates and times of the public open house meetings will also be
advertised in the Citizen and LeDroit newspapers.

An interim project report containing draft recommendations for street design will be
brought forward to Committee following public review of the draft policy. The
completion of the Street Design Policy is projected for spring of 2007.

An information report setting out the terms and timelines of the project (including a
related project dealing with right of way lighting design) was presented to a joint
meeting of Transportation and Planning and Environment Committees on April 5,
2006. For more information on the project, please check the staff report
