It is important for people to realize that the recent Heritage report
recommended both legal protection for DRM (AKA: control over
communications will be in the hands of media and software monopolies, not
the citizen) and a "claim and censor" ISP liability regime, the two most
controversial aspects of the USA's DMCA law.

For those who have somehow been confused by media reports about music
file sharing suggesting that Canada does copyright differently, please
realize that much of the media got the court cases wrong and were also not
watching the extremist changes to copyright proposed by parliament. The
Heritage report shows a lack of understanding of even the most basic
concepts of how the Internet works, or how computer software is created.
Beyond seeking to make illegal techniques required for software
compatibility (IE: those all-important "save-as" functions in our
software), it also grants to the monopolies of the old media the power to
levy (like a tax, but not accountable to anyone) the new media. This
includes levies on documents published on the Internet where the copyright
holder intended it to be royalty-free, but didn't hire a lawyer or use a
complex license to say so!

If you have not written your MP, do so now. This is especially true if
your MP (or the MP of a friend you can convince to write!) is one of the
Important MPs with more direct influence over copyright:
