Arts, crafts, busking, street theatre, flowers, street newspapers etc are
all outlawed in Ottawa with or without a license. The only vending permitted
is hotdog stands, chip wagons and ice cream peddlers.
STREET VENDING PROHIBITED
>> 2. (1) No person shall sell, display, place or leave for the
>> purpose of sale any goods or refreshments on any part of a City highway.
>>
>> (2) No person shall place, stop, park or leave any
>> object or vehicle for the purpose of vending there from on any part of a City
>> highway.
>>
>> (city ³highway² includes all streets, sidewalks, bridges, trestles, viaduct
>> or other structure forming part of the highway)

This bylaw was passed on August 24, 2005 without proper public consultation.
1) The public advertisement called for public consultation on Vending on
Highways without a subtitling explain that highways was defined as all
streets and sidewalks in Ottawa.
2) The city did not wait for recommendations from its own task force that
was tasked with public consultation on street vending.
STILL TIME
There are a few months before the bylaw is enforced so there is time to show
an outcry for proper public consultation. Come out to the Task Force on
Homelessness and the Safe Streets Act meeting August 12, 2005 5:00-7:00 pm
Col By Room at City Hall and voice your concerns about this eradication of
Ottawa¹s street culture.
