Party ends before it gets started: Homeless activists behind last year's
tent city protest in front of City Hall were all set to stir up another
good-natured sit-in this summer by protesting the new "designated spaces
program" bylaw.
The City apparently want to permanently prohibit all street vending in
Ottawa, with or without a permit (except for our precious hot dog and chip
wagons), at the end of August. Claiming the bylaw would take away one of
their last means of making a living independently, protesters tried to set
up a "Chiarelli Street Bazaar" at City Hall on July 1 at 9 a.m. Things
didn't go so well.
By noon, organizer Jane Scharf had been arrested for refusing to vacate the
premises, which carries a $70 fine, and the others were banned from ever
returning. I guess the City just didn't want to ruin anyone's Canada Day
partying with an embarrassing, but legal, protest. Last year's protest in
the same spot (right outside Bluesfest) lasted over a month before it was
torn down by police in the middle of the night.
