I am wondering why someone who was married in Dade County in 1942 would not be found in the marriage records on ancestry.com.   Are the ancestry.com Florida marriage records incomplete?

Donald,

Are you sure the marriage license was applied for in Dade County?
Have you widened your search at Ancestry? I had a record that I could
not find and finally found it by not including anything except the
last name and the year. The Florida Marriage database at Ancestry
includes records:

Indexed by Ancestry (includes images of the records):

* Florida State Marriage Index, 1927-1969

Indexed by Florida Department of Health (no images available):

* Florida State Marriage Index, 1970-2001

Indexed by Jordan Dodd, Liahona Research (no images available):

* Marriages for various counties, 1822-1875 (compiled from various
records at county courthouses and/or on microfilm)

If you will share the names you are looking for, I can double check
the Department of Health microfiche which is available at our local
library.

Hi Patrice.

Here are the names:
George Walter Aldrich
Laura Alberta Bell
There were probably married sometime in 1948. I'm basing that on Laura's
July 1948 application for a name change on her social security card.
I believe the marriage was in Dade county because both George and Laura had
been living in Miami since the early 1940s. I've also checked Georgia and
found no record there either. If I were to speculate, I'd guess that they
were just living together and never did marry. The only thing wrong with my
speculation is the social security card name change. I would think that one
would need proof of marriage, like a marriage license, to request a name
change.

Any and all help you can provide will be greatly appreciated

Donald,

I'll check the microfiche, but I won't get there until February 7th.
In the meantime, I double checked Ancestry and can't find either
George or Laura. Have you checked with Social Security? If you catch
someone there in a good mood, they can sometimes tell you what records
were used for a name change. I've found them to be very helpful.
Just avoid Mondays and Fridays. <grin>

FWIW, Common Law marriage was recognized in Florida until 1968.
Source: Florida Statute 741.211
http://www.flsenate.gov/Statutes/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&Search_String=&URL=0700-0799/0741/Sections/0741.211.html

Common-law marriages void.

No common-law marriage entered into after January 1, 1968, shall be
valid, except that nothing contained in this section shall affect any
marriage which, though otherwise defective, was entered into by the
party asserting such marriage in good faith and in substantial
compliance with this chapter.

I'll get back to you after I visit the Library.

Patrice

Hi Patrice.

Thanks for the quick response.
Would the Social Security have that kind of information for a name change
that took place in 1948?
Should I contact the Miami office of the national office?
Feb 7th. Isn't that far away.
Regards

Donald

Donald,

I don't honestly know what they have. I know they keep the original
application for SS. I received a copy of one that was completed in
1939. I would think they would document name changes just as
rigorously. Call your local office and ask them. Then call a
different office and ask the same question -- national should work.
