The example is excellent and the picture highly explicative, as always on this blog.
Your statement "it is only forward linear prediction which adds new information to the spectrum" is not correct.
1. LP can't add any authentically NEW information because it simply extrapolates the information already contained into the FID.
2. Zero-filling has the property to recover the information contained into the imaginary part of the FID (uncorrelated to the real part) and to reverse this additional information onto the real part of the spectrum.
3. The spectroscopist, to run an LP algorithm, feeds it with the hypothetical number of lines. While this is certainly NEW information not already present into the FID, it is arbitrary.
Bottom Line: LP is a good thing, yet things are more complicated.

Linear prediction is an important tool in the field of Signal Processing, but also in related engineering fields. Linear prediction is the process where we attempt to predict the value of the next sample, given a set of previous samples. The number of previous samples required depends on the type of predictor that we employ. We will discuss this in more detail later.

A predictor is said to have an order of m if it has at most m taps in the forward or backward direction. The forward direction, the feed forward elements are the zeros of the filter. The backward direction, or the feedback elements are the poles of the filter. In other words, the filter has an order m if it has m zeros or m poles, whichever is greater.

A forward linear predictor is a filter that attempts to predict the u(n) sample from the previous m samples. Forward predictors are causal, which means they only act on previous results.

Backward prediction is similar to forward prediction, they are closely related mathematically. Backward prediction is the process of trying to determine the u(n + M - 1) element of a signal given the next M elements. In other words, the backward predictor is an attempt to "remember" what a past value was, given later values.

Lattice filters are interesting tools to use because they can simultaneously calculate the forward and backward filter coefficients given a set of special reflection coefficients. These reflection coefficients can, in turn, be calculated from the forward or backward filter coefficients. Also, the reflection coefficients can be calculated from other metrics, such as the signal power, or the autocorrelation function. We will discuss the reflection coefficients more in the next chapter.

Forward Linear Prediction adds data points with ampltitude to the end of the FID. It is similar to Zero-Fill, but adding points with amplitude can lead to sharper resonances especially if the FID was truncated due to too short of an acquisition time- the nuclei were not fully relaxed at the end of the FID. The linear prediction is accomplished by predicting what the amplitude of the points should have been after the last real data point acquired.

1) To accomplish Forward Linear Prediction, click on LP Filling, then select Forward in the box below the Zero-Fill.

2) In the Linear Prediction box on the lower right, when you click on LP Filling, the software should choose the From, and To and the Method as well as the Basis Points and the Coefficients. The From is where to start predicting points, the To is the amount of points to predict to, the Method is the way the prediction is accomplished, the Basis points are the amount of points being used, and the Coefficients are the amount of coefficients being used for the prediction.

From = usually the prediction is started at the last acquired data point (Original).

To = the amount of points to predict to, normally 2 times to 4 times the amount of points acquired (Original).

Method = Typically Zhu-Bax is best, but there are other options.

Basis Points = Amount of points acquired used to predict the points. Normally, this is all acquired points (Original).

Coefficients = Typically the default value is fine.

3) The Spectrum Size option in the upper right of the window needs to be at least equal to the To points in the lower right. Any number of points in Spectrum Size that is greater the To points is zero-fill; however, if the Spectrum Size were smaller, then the linear predicted points will be ignored.

4) In 1D data, normally linear prediction should not be necessary as enough data points should have been acquired to prevent truncation of the FID. However, if you see sinusoidal side bands off of sharp resonances, the linear prediction option can potentially eliminate them. Thus, to confirm the effectiveness of linear prediction, zoom in on a sharp resonance, such as a solvent peak and see how that resonance changes with application of forward linear prediction.

The electrocardiogram (ECG) represents the electrical activity of the heart. It is characterized by its recurrent or periodic behaviour with each beat. Each recurrence is composed of a wave sequence consisting of P, QRS and T-waves, where the most characteristic wave set is the QRS complex. In this paper, we have developed an algorithm for detection of the QRS complex. The algorithm consists of several steps: signal-to-noise enhancement, linear prediction for ECG signal analysis, nonlinear transform, moving window integrator, centre-clipping transformation and QRS detection. Linear prediction determines the coefficients of a forward linear predictor by minimizing the prediction error by a least-square approach. The residual error signal obtained after processing by the linear prediction algorithm has very significant properties which will be used to localize and detect QRS complexes. The detection algorithm is tested on ECG signals from the universal MIT-BIH arrhythmia database and compared with the Pan and Tompkins QRS detection method. The results we obtain show that our method performs better than this method. Our algorithm results in fewer false positives and fewer false negatives.

Calculate, or predict, a future value by using existing values. The future value is a y-value for a given x-value. The existing values are known x-values and y-values, and the future value is predicted by using linear regression. You can use these functions to predict future sales, inventory requirements, or consumer trends.

I'm just learning about linear prediction and was wondering whether or not there are any signals that would produce no error if run through a linear prediction algorithm. I was thinking (maybe naively) that if we have a linear signal (one that changes linearly with time) that we should be able to linearly predict this with no error. Is my intuition on this correct? Are there any other signals that are like this?

Secondly, I'm glad my intuition was correct, but I was having doubts in the first place because I couldn't exactly predict future samples of my signal no matter what my input signal was. For example, here's an image of me trying to get the linear prediction coefficients using 'lpc' function in Matlab.

There are similar linear relations for other signals when sampling conditions are met, and for different cost functions. I am happy to dig into old stuff here. In a 1927, G. I'd like to use as definition of "exact (forward) linear prediction" that given a finite number of the first consecutive samples of a signal, all of the following samples can be predicted with zero residual error by a linear predictor with the same finite number of coefficients.

MATLAB's lpc is not exact because it assumes that the data continues beyond its start and end as zero-valued, in order to use an autocorrelation-based method. For your own arbitrary data you can use the following Octave script to find the coefficients that minimize the sum of squared residual error of predicting those data points that are preceded by enough (N or more) data points to enable their prediction:

N being as small as possible for the given data to make the prediction error virtually zero, the choice of cost function (here least squares) does not matter. With larger N, there would be an extra degree of freedom in the solution that might enable the solver to minimize numerical error by the cost function, allowing its choice to affect the result.

For general signals, linear prediction alone is not enough, and the error produced by it must be corrected for in order to exactly produce the desired signal. This is called linear predictive coding. Correction is not added after predicting the complete signal, but to each prediction of a sample before doing the next prediction. This way the prediction on each sample is done based on the exact past signal and not on erroneous past predictions:

Let's consider again signals for which exact prediction is possible. Either a history of $N$ samples of $x[k]$ must be properly initialized, or alternatively, using the same coefficients, linear predictive coding can be used with non-zero corrections for the first $N$ samples, typically with the history of $x[k]$ set to zero. After this "warm-up", the rest of $x[k]$ will be exactly predicted without auxiliary information or correction.
