The fellowship is a 10-week, full-time (40 hours per week), paid opportunity where multidisciplianry student teams bring unconventional thinking and novel approaches to building solutions as embedded fellows within military commands.

Undergraduates, graduate students, and recent graduates are eligible to apply for the X-Force Fellowship. Top applicants will have demonstrated technical or entrepreneurial experience. Evidence of past self-directed work is strongly preferred.

The X-Force Fellowship diversifies the national security innovation base by creating a new model of national security service. Minimal experience working with the military is not only acceptable, but preferred. Applicants with prior military or government work experience will be evaluated and accepted by exception.

Successful applicants should anticipate an expectation of proficiency in both technical and entrepreneurial skills. Strong candidates will have a robust technical skillset, solid project-based work, an entrepreneurial mindset, and demonstrated leadership ability.

In the past, X-Force Fellows have worked on a wide range of projects including hardware design and prototyping, software development, data analysis and visualization, technology scouting, communications and marketing strategy, and policy research. X-Force Fellows are matched with a problem and a DoD project military sponsor based on skill set, educational background, and interview feedback. Each X-Force Fellowship team will consist of at least two Fellows with complementary skill sets to ensure the creation of innovative, effective solutions.

The 2024 Fellowship is expected to take place predominantly in person, with virtual problems accepted on an as-needed basis. All X-Force Fellowship projects are sponsored by DoD organizations located within the United States. Successful applicants will be notified of their specific placement in their acceptance letters. Fellows are expected to be located within commuting distance of their project sponsor for the duration of the summer.

All intellectual property developed during the X-Force program belongs to the program participants. However, students are required to turn over a copy of their product to their DoD sponsors at the close of the fellowship, with the understanding that the government retains government purpose rights to findings and solutions.

The NSIN X-Force program addresses national security problems that require technical and entrepreneurial expertise. If your component seeks X-Force summer talent, please visit the X-Force Information for DoD Mission Partners page to learn more about the program and to submit a national security problem.

WASHINGTON, March 6, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced the official opening of the new IBM X-Force Cyber Range in Washington, DC. The range includes new custom training exercises specifically designed to help U.S. federal agencies, their suppliers and critical infrastructure organizations more effectively respond to persistent and disruptive cyberattacks, and threats posed by AI. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to help everyone from legal and mission-critical leaders, to the C-Suite and technical security leaders prepare for a real-world cyber incident.

According to IBM's 2023 Cost of a Data Breach report the global average cost of a data breach reached $4.45 million, with the US facing the highest breach costs across all regions. Organizations that formed an incident response (IR) team and tested their IR plan experienced faster incident response times and lower costs than organizations that did neither. In fact, the report found that high levels of IR planning and testing saved industry and government nearly $1.5 million in breach costs and 54 days from the data breach lifecycle.

"From national security threats to supply chain disruptions impacting the goods and services we rely on every day, cyberattacks on government and critical infrastructure can have ramifications that go far beyond the balance sheet," said Alice Fakir, Partner, Lead of Cybersecurity Services, US Federal Market for IBM Consulting. "The elite and highly customizable cyber response training we provide at our new DC range helps organizations and federal agencies better defend against existing and emerging threats, and also addresses federal mandates like those in the Biden Administration's Executive Order 14028 focused on improving the nation's cybersecurity."

In addition to government agencies and critical infrastructure providers, businesses across all sectors can participate in cyber response training. Examples of the types of simulations that will be delivered through the X-Force Cyber Range in DC include:

Training Critical Infrastructure to Strengthen Response in Cyber Crisis
Globally, nearly 70% of incidents that IBM X-Force responded to last year were against critical infrastructure organizations, according to the 2024 X-Force Threat Intelligence Index. Given the continuous stream of attacks targeting these organizations, and the critical role that defending critical infrastructure plays in America's National Cybersecurity Strategy, IBM will offer two free exercises at its new DC cyber range where select infrastructure providers will respond to simulated cyberattacks.

The first event will take place in the spring of 2024 and will host organizations within the chemical, energy (including electric, oil, gas, and renewables), and water industries. The scenario will be customized to cater to specific issues facing these industries. The second session will be held later this year. To learn more about attending one of the upcoming sessions for critical infrastructure organizations, visit here.

Yesterday ComicsAlliance debuted Olivier Coipel's variant cover to Uncanny X-Force #1, showing fans both the updated team lineup and each member's new looks -- including the long overdue return of Storm's iconic 1980s mohawk hairdo. That image was but a tease for what we're about to show you, the actual Marvel model sheets designed by artist Kris Anka. Cooler still, Anka and Uncanny X-Force writer Sam Humphries provide exclusive commentaryon each piece and offer as yet unrevealed details on the new Marvel NOW series, which is to be drawn regularly by Ron Garney.

ComicsAlliance: One of the first things you notice when looking at these costumes is the color palette. The tones are all muted, which isn't what's typically expected with a superhero team. Was this a decision that was made at the outset, or did you try a variety of color schemes before everyone decided this was the direction to go in?

Kris Anka: From the very beginning, when I was approached to design the New X-Force costumes, I saw them in black and white. It might just be conditioning from the last volume of X-Force to Uncanny X-Force where all their costumes were black and grey. It is just a gut reaction for me that all X-Force costumes must fit into that scheme. So no, there wasnt much variety exploration into their colors. However, when pitched that this is a new sexy, sleaker, "James Bond"-esque take on the X-Force idea -- which I took to mean that this will somewhat be lighter-hearted or at the very least a bit more fun than the previous titles -- I thought it'd be a nice throwback to try to implement a little bit of color into their overall black and grey suit designs; just to add a little bit of personality into all of them. So frankly, more exploration was done on Psylocke's sash than anywhere else on her, trying to find a particular tone that worked well with the costume as a whole but also saying "Psylocke" in an instant. I tried all over from white, to red, to various purples.

Sam Humphries: I love these costumes, they do such a good job of embodying the feel and vibe of this book. Kris did an amazing job -- it was a lot of fun to kick ideas around with him and see the looks develop over time. My only wish is that we could keep going until we redesigned the entire Marvel Universe! MARVEL NOW: FADE TO BLACK!

Uncanny X-Force are a gang of predators. Think of the way predatory animals "dress" -- to hide, and to intimidate. Bright yellow might work for a lion in the jungle, or in the halls of the Jean Grey School, but in the shadowy corners of the Marvel Universe, it's gonna get you laughed at and killed. These characters are going to confront the dark secrets of the mutant world -- things the other X-Men fear and hate. And when you go digging into the darkness, you'd better dress for the occasion.

CA: Let's talk about what is easily the most important development in this series: the return of Mohawk Storm. During the Chris Claremont/Paul Smith run on X-Men in the 1980s, the mohawk look for Ororo was a reflection of her personality at the time. She had more of a punk vibe then, but her look here is far more regal. Is bringing the mohawk back now meant to be part of her reaction to recent events in her life (her divorce from Black Panther, the death of Professor X, etc.)?
