Being a complete novice to this;
I can't find out how to actually download an images from my flickr
account.
Nor can I find a downloads folder.

Sorry for such a silly question.

No problem. I'm glad you asked.

To download a picture, you just need to open it (i.e., tap on that
picture in the image grid so that it opens in full-screen mode), then
do a long-press on the picture by holding your finger down on it for a
second or two. This should bring up a menu where you can select
"Download".

You'll be asked what size you want to download ("Original", if
available, is the largest -- which options are available for download
will
depend on what the owner of the photo has chosen to make available).
Pick one of those and hit "OK". You should then see a progress
notification in your status
bar at the top.

When the download is complete, it will go on your SD card in the
folder FlickrFree/download. However, it may take some time to show up
in the Media Gallery, because the Android system has to do a new scan
and find the picture first. Unfortunately, that's something that my
app doesn't have any control over.
