Newbie questions about desktop vs web server install

I am very interested in Flexpaper but don't quite understand how it all works. I want to publish many large catalogs, several hundred pages each. I need them to load fast so I think I want "Split mode" ?

Can I do split mode with the desktop publisher? If I use the desktop version and upload it to my site, how is it rendered in a browser? Doesn't the viewer need installed somehow on my server?

With the web server installation, are there any hosts you recommend that allow 3rd party exe's?
