I just bought my Macbook Pro, and I've been getting it setup the way I want it. I installed Google Chrome and it left a white drive icon the desktop. I've tried putting it in the trash bin, but it says it cannot be deleted because Chrome is using it (even though there is no chrome window open). I've also tried dragging it into a folder in Finder (applications, documents, etc.) and it will copy it into the folder, but the icon is still there on the desktop. What should I do? Is there another way I can hide it or cut and paste it into a folder?
There isn't anything that gives me the option to Quit. There is an option to eject it, but the same message keeps coming up (The disk "Google Chrome" couldn't be ejected because "Google Chrome" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject the disk again.) when I try to do that.
On images that we build we install the chrome browser (all users version). The cheeky little thing always creates a desktop icon when a new user logs in, despite there being no obvious way of preventing this (no all users desktop folder icon, no startup/logon process or task). We have also found this to be the case when deploying Chrome via group policy.
Yeh! Ive half tested it, i know it doesnt create the Desktop Icon, But havent had time to prevent the taskbar icon, if i can find the reg key i might kill that, but havent got the time, as working on a server migration and automating it completety, and supposed to be doing a big OSD Project next wednesday, but could do with sorting the chrome thingie as well! #NotEnoughHoursInTheDay
Hi Maggie, What ive found is that even with the enterprise msi download, only part of the master_preferences file actually works for example I still get a desktop icon and taskbar icon, however you can remove the desktop icons using some simple PowerShell to remove the .ink file, however to remove the taskbar icon I am a still stumped, I know theres a reg value you could use - I just need to find it!
All of my PDF files have had their icons changed to Chrome icons. The files no longer open with Acrobat Reader....they now open through the Chrome browser. I'm not sure what caused this. The only thing I can think of is that my girlfriend was on my computer renaming a PDF when I noticed a popup that asked something about file extension or destination. I tried to tell her not to hit the "yes" button, but I was too late. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the problem. Can anyone help me to get the icons changed back to PDF icons?
You need to reset your file associations so that your system uses Reader to open pdf files. It's pretty easy to do but varies from one OS to the other. You can google the information on resetting file associations and find instructions or you could let us know what OS you are using and we can let you know how to do it.
To set Chrome as default, I used "Control Panel>Default Programs>Set Your Default Programs". This was after the Windows 10 Action Center "All Settings>System>Default Apps" method would not set Chrome as default.
To solve the icon issue I did a right click on any PDF file, picked "Open With>Choose Another App>selected Acrobat(or Reader)>checked the "always use this app for pdf". I then had to do a restart and all was good again.
Failed option 2. type chrome://settings/content in the Chrome address bar. Check the box at the end "Open PDF files in the default viewer application, the Finished button. After I did this I tried to open a PDF on a webpage and Chrome went crazy, flashing a blank tab open and closed repeatedly.
Failed option 3. Windows 10 Start > Settings > Choose default apps by file type > .pdf > select Adobe instead of Chrome :
Result: the setting did not update for me, Chrome could not be dislodged this way.
Just removed the shortcuts in C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs then found the exe's (I had three applications that Chrome took over) and put the new ones in there. Worked no problem. Hope this helps.
I have the same problem with pdf files opening in Chrome. I tried changing the setting in Chrome to use the default program but it still continued to open in Chrome (even though Acrobat was the default program). I gave up, uninstalled Chrome and used Opera. Despite this, the same problem exists except now it tells me Chrome needs updating! If I use File Manager to list th files it shows pdf files with the Chrome icon. By selecting the default program to open & selecting Acrobat all is fine until next reboot.Windows 7 Ultimate, 64 bit. ANy help greatly appreciated. Thx.
After installing MalWareBytes, and running a scan, and then quarantining the 21 items found, I was horrified to discover that my Chrome Icons had disappeared. I've appended the log as Malwarebytes.txt so you can see which files had been quarantined.
These are not false positive detections. I would like though if once you rebuild your shortcuts again (You create custom ones for sites you visit? Gmail, etc?), can you zip them up & attach here? I'd like to have a look at them.
Do note that you will need to perform the same on ALL devices you sync to this account & all logins on the PC that sync to this account. Otherwise one of the devices or logins can sync back the bad data again.
Do you mean you want me to zip the *.lnk(I presume) files created when chrome creates its' desktop icons? They are just a convoluted URL. Or the actual files that are being detected? Or something else. I get confused. Sorry for the trouble.
Normally if there is malicious data detected in a LNK file, if it is a legit shortcut for say, Chrome, but the target path is hijacked to open a bad site, we just clean out the bad URL within it & restore normal function of the shortcut.
It would be unusual to have them outright deleted. Hoping to reproduce this on my machine so we can get to the bottom of the issue.
My professor had uploaded a ppt.x lecture that I downloaded from Canvas. It downloaded as an initial ppt.x so when I opened it through powerpoints and printed it as a PDF it saved, however it saved as an Chrome HTML pdf icon. It is now shown on my desktop as an HTML icon but I cannot delete, open it, or do anything with it. The file name saved as "APznzab22y1Kw1OM14D3nNZLtTA6gp2luVt--5exFlFuOiwr5JiI_jfVkTJ8s06ciUG0OsIiUSDrSfzl2XO_f5nWB3gMKO6582i4Z2gTgp1m7zUJJZKvwtpbWwtCqoNCcxptVGTVACr18fSlsENtpU_TqAA97mM9xnM1PLz3pwjFGWJOF8woP1lJNSznkb2qMMosM5bpT3Huu0zJs25KN2GkpreTLx1Vup0dTU4p--riXH42cK00NHgTMKb"
I hardly doubt it is a virus since it is a file personally uploaded by my professor but I do need help getting rid of it in some way. I have already tried going to "Downloads" but it is not visible there nor is it visible when I go to Control Panel and attempt to uninstall programs.
I found easiest way to delete this chrome created apps from lunched. All you have to do is click on finder from the doc, then on the finder window there is a search bar, now search each name of the apps, like youtube, and you will see on the application part similar icon comes up. drag and trash it. Thats all. You don't need any codings.
After adding the line, be sure you removed the previous launcher then start the application and right clicking on its dock icon check 'Keep in dock': just dragging & dropping the .desktop file onto the dock may still lead to a second launcher/icon appearing in the dock.
To unpack and explain this command line a bit: first it copies (cp) the global .desktop file to your user directory, since the latter overrides the former for the current user, and isn't changed by package upgrades.
and do this to all of them, i.e. using the global flag (/g), and directly editing the file (--in-place) rather than outputting to the shell. The last argument is the filename to pass to sed, which is the file the cp command has just created.
Many questions about other applications than Google Chrome have been marked as duplicate of this one, although this is about Google Chrome, because the definitive answer contains a general non-Chrome specific solution.
I had a problem that seemed a duplicate (and that I was about to post as a separate question) about other applications and I couldn't initially see the solution there in the middle of a large text about Google Chrome. Also, that solution was not in fact working for me (see below, case 3). So, I think that it could be useful to have a clear separate answer -- to which all those closed questions marked as duplicate (and others that will suffer the same faith) can be referred.
Add that name to the line and paste the line in the .desktop file somewhere for each of the three sections in the file: [Desktop Entry], [NewWindow Shortcut Group] and [NewIncognito Shortcut Group] (for example, at the end of each section).
The OP of that question has posted this in a laconic answer: Finally, there is a simple way to fix this: simple change the icon file from webide.png to webide.ico, or using this useful app to edit the menu:
This happened to me when I have created a .desktop file to launch a static beta version of DeadBeeF, the stable (non-static) version of which was installed at system level, and then dragged & dropped that file onto the dock. When starting the program from the dock launcher a second identical icon appeared.
That second icon had the same option upon right-click as the first. Checking 'Keep in dock' for the second icon/launcher and un-cheking that for the first, and then launching the application from it, there would be no second icon but the stable version would start instead of the static one. Keeping both on the dock and starting the application from both, alternatively, they will start each its own version, but only the launcher of the system-level installed version will be underlined in Plank.
