Hi,

A while ago a colleague and I had trouble with S/R and our databases got merged because somehow the project identifier oin the settings had been changed - we don't know how it happened as I had to hunt around for a while to find where the setting had changed, and it's unlikely he would have accidentally found that place and changed.

Anyway, we are now wanting to share the project by making and restoring backups (in general we are each only working on one database, I just need to see his occasionally to check as I mentor him). Is it possible to remove projects from LexBox so I can restore his project on my computer under the same name rather than having to rename it? i won't be altering anything, I just need to be able to see his work.

Thanks,
Lizzie

Hi, Lizzie.

If I'm understanding your request correctly, you have a project named "xyz" on your computer which is currently connected to a Lexbox project via S/R. You would like to now restore project "xyz" from a backup you've received from your colleague, but when you attempt to restore that backup with the name "xyz", FLEx tells you that it's not possible, because the project you already have by that name is a shared project.

If I've accurately described your situation, you can delete the project "xyz" that is currently on your computer, then restore the backup as "xyz".

Does that solve your problem, or have I misunderstood your situation?

P.S. It is possible for a Lexbox project to be deleted, but the owner of the project would need to write to ad...@languagedepot.org to request that. At least, that's my current understanding.

Hello Lizzie,

Maybe not what you actually want, but another (quick) way of dealing with this without a lexbox operation could be to:
- Use screen sharing software to "look" at your colleagues’ work (i.e zoom or Chrome remote desktop)
- Ask your colleague to copy the  .fwdate file via a could service and "install" it on your computer as a read-only for you to look at. You could use screen shots to send comments and suggestion ....

Ah thank you Kevin - that worked. I thought I didn't have the project 'xyz' on my computer at all but it turns out it was hidden in the depths.

1. We really don't recommend moving .fwdata files around....  That's a good way to end up with a mess, if you don't know what you are doing!  (There are many other files involved in a FieldWorks project besides only the .fwdata file.)

The recommended ways to share a project are through S/R and backups.

2. If a project is on LexBox, if you make a backup of it and restore it to a new name, it will be a "fork" of the project.  That is, it will be a copy of the other one, but no longer connected to the same Send/Receive history.  So, for instance, he could make a backup and send it to you, and you could restore it to a different name.

3. Alternatively, the workflow we recommend for consultants is this:
 - He does his work and does S/R on a regular basis.
 - You use "Get project from colleague..." to get a copy of the project on your computer.
 - When you want to look at a future version of the project, you delete your copy of it, and do "Get project from colleague...." to get a fresh copy of it, without sending any changes you may have made (intentionally or unintentionally) in your copy.

Hi Lizzie,

I’m sorry things got messed up with your S/R.  I’d be glad to help you get it straightened out.   In the meantime, if you want to delete the project from your machine, that’s fine, though I’d make a backup first.  Or you could just restore the backup file with a different name.

Thanks Ann,

I think we're pretty much sorted now. Fortunately it was my project that got 'infected' with changes from colleague's project and not the other way round, and I've been able to disentangle them. Maybe quicker if I'd asked you to do it but it was also a good opportunity to clean up entries and add grammatical info etc by going through things slowly.
