LanguageDepot vs. LanguageForge

We are in the process of moving the Send/Receive server to a new domain name. The old name was public.languagedepot.org. The new name is public.languageforge.org. In FW9.1, in the Send/Receive Project dialog, under the Internet button, you’ll see languageForge.org instead of LanguageDepot.org. This is really going to the same place. Probably this fall, SIL programs will no longer use the languagedepot.org domain name.

 

The names are somewhat confusing. There is a web-based dictionary building program called Language Forge that uses the languageforge.org domain name. When Flex displays languageforge.org it is really using public.languageforge.org which is a different site. So don’t be confused thinking that Flex is now somehow connecting directly to the Language Forge program. From Language Forge you can still do Send/Receive to a Flex repo on public.languageforge.org.

 

Also, when going to the repository website, you could go to languagedepot.org and it would take you to the public.languagedepot.org website. To get to this location using the new domain name, you will need to go to public.languageforge.org since languageforge.org will go to the Language Forge website.

Hi Ken,

Are you saying that we are dropping languagedepot.org altogether, or just not using it in FLEX? I have a number of projects that sync with languagedepot (mostly through WeSay), and I think it would be odd to have that suddenly stop working. If languagedepot.org is going away, it would certainly be nice to have notice and transition instructions in time to inform our teams.

Yes, Language Depot is going away.  However everything on Language Depot is on Language Forge already.  If fact every time you do a S/R, you are already using Language Forge.  When we do the switchover, you will need to use version 9.1 which uses Language Forge internally or actually point to Language Forge because that won’t be automatic anymore.  Before that happens, everyone will be notified.
