Using analysis and vernacular in the notes field

I'm working with Sinhala texts (vernacular language, Noto Sans Sinhala) and English (Noto Sans) as my analysis language.

I would like to keep some notes about words in the note field for the entry. First question: Is that the right place to keep notes (I'm assuming so)

Second question: How can I make notes that include a mixture of English and Sinhala? Right now the English is fine but Tofu is showing for the Sinhala glyphs.

I have tried adding the Sinhala range to my English analysis language. In the interface it shows ? marks because the Sinhala glyphs aren't included in Noto Sans. And it doesn't fix the problem.

I have tried adding Sinhala as a second Analysis language and then in the note field I have both writing systems configured to be used. Still doesn't fix the problem.

I have restarted, etc.

What to do?

You can use English and Sinhala in the same (note) field.  If the note is for English text, select the Sinhala and choose the correct writing system from the toolbar.

English/French is not a good example because probably both fonts contain all the letters for both alphabets.

Here is what I see when I try that:

When English is selected, the English letters render but the Sinhala do not.

And when Sinhala is selected there is the opposite problem:

I see. That selection is at the character level not the field level.

That's awfully tedious. Without doing that the note displays fine in my dictionary view. I wonder why the notes field can't do the same.

In the dictionary view there is a fallback font being used.  The details pane shows you exactly the font you chose, rather than a fallback font.

In FLEx, there is a high value placed on tagging each piece of text for what language (and script) it is in.  If that isn't important for notes, you could certainly use a font that has both Sinhala and roman characters in it, for just that field.

By the way, I think you were also asking about Semantic Domains.  The best person to contact is Kevin_...@sil.org.  He can tell you a lot more about that.  And the list of domains is found in the Lists area.

No, that wasn’t as good example, but it works fir me with Hebrew tioo.  This example uses the Engkysh ws in both parts of the text:

This has the Hebrew ws applied to the Hebrew part of the text:

Please send me a backup of your project or if it’s on LexBox, what is the repository ID?

Dear Ann and Beth,

Thank you so much for your time and explanations.

I understand now that the software is working as expected. And I realize there are so many design decisions that have to be made and users sometimes just have to adjust.

When I mark up a note with the proper language, the dictionary view is greatly improved, so I will just go with that method.

This is really amazing software and community. I feel blessed to have found it. Thank you again for all your hard work!
