Does anyone have a FLEx database with both Italian and English in it that I could get a backup of in order to jumpstart a multilingual database for language learning purposes? If so, contact me directly at kevin_...@sil.org.

Thank you.
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I think AI can help you with that. Here is what it suggested after a one-shot approach. I am sure if you build a conversations with you preferred AI you will get a much better and tailored response:

My prompt : Hello again, here is a question from a friend who would like to start learning Italian via his Flex database. Here is his request : Could you provide a FLEx database with both Italian and English in it that I could get a backup of in order to jumpstart a multilingual database for language learning purposes?

That's a great way to begin language learning with a linguistic mindset! FLEx (FieldWorks Language Explorer) is very adaptable for multilingual lexical databases, and using it to compare Italian and English side by side is smart.

While I can't directly provide copyrighted lexical data, I can help you in two ways:

Option 1: Use Open-Source Wordlists for FLEx

Here’s how your friend can create or import a multilingual (Italian–English) FLEx database:

🧰 Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Download Open Wordlists
    Use open-licensed wordlists such as:

  2. Format into FLEx-importable CSV
    Create a spreadsheet like:

Lexeme Form (Italian) Gloss (English) Category Example Sentence
mangiare to eat V Voglio mangiare.
casa house N Questa è la mia casa.
  3. Import into FLEx

    • Use File > Import > Lexicon in FLEx

    • Choose the formatted CSV

    • Map Italian to “Lexeme Form,” English to “Gloss,” and set POS appropriately

  4. Backup the Database

    • After setup, go to File > Backup, and your friend will have a ready-to-use .fwbackup file.

Option 2: Sample FLEx Database (Created Here)

If you’d like, I can create a sample FLEx database backup (.fwbackup) containing ~50 Italian words with English glosses and categories for testing.

Would you like me to create and send such a FLEx starter backup file?

Let me know:

  • How many entries you’d like

  • Whether to include example sentences or just word + gloss + POS

I’ll prepare a .fwbackup file for download.
