Dear group,

I am running a fieldmethods class and we are using FLEx. One student only has a mac and we couldn't get FLEx running on her laptop. Could someone please point me to instructions about how to get FLEx running on a mac?

Thanks in advance,

Antoinette

Hi Antoinette,

It needs to run under virtualization.
Parallels is one possible virtualization program.

Yours,
Kari

My wife and I run FLEx using the free VirtualBox and a virtual machine running the free Wasta Linux operating system. You can also install a Windows virtual machine, but would need a license. —Kevin

Greetings,

I have tried both parallels and virtual box and prefer the former hands down.  Virtual box is twitchy and difficult to work with and does not allow clipboard access to pass between the mac and pc side... but parallels is expensive...~$70/year so there you go.

Hi Glen,

Try this to allow clipboard access to pass between the mac and pc on the virtual box.

  • launch the Windows 10 VM
  • In the top menu go to Device -> Insert Guest Additions CD image
  • On the Windows, VM go to Explorer, then look for the drive that represents the newly "inserted" CD
  • Once there, run VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe as administrator and install
  • Enable Clipboard and Drag&Drop under either VM settings or the Devices menu

The other main alternative is VMware Fusion. The current version has the
advantage of being free for non-commercial use, only requiring a free
registration. Fusion and Parallels are pretty much comparable with
regards to features and performance, though some users strongly prefer
one or the other.
