We are happy to announce the Beta patch version of FieldWorks 9.2.7.  The biggest change in FW 9.2.7 is a huge improvement in exporting pictures to Word (and XHTML and Webonary) and a few other fixes are included.

You can see the details at https://software.sil.org/fieldworks/fw-925For more specifics about version 9.2, see the release notes at http://software.sil.org/fieldworks/beta-release-notes2/.

We are happy to announce the Beta patch version of FieldWorks 9.3.6.  This patch allows you to use popup windows to edit entries created from Texts & Words among other things.

You can see the details at https://software.sil.org/fieldworks/fw-925For more specifics about version 9.3, see the Beta release notes at http://software.sil.org/fieldworks/beta-release-notes2/.

Sorry for a noob question… Are these beta releases able to damage our data? Meaning, is the risk of using the beta release merely that it might crash more often? Or should we really only be using the beta release for testing?

As with all releases, if something goes wrong, we will do everything we can to help.  There are quite a few people (users, developers, and testers) who work with these new versions and we wouldn’t release them if we knew of any issues that would harm your data.

Thanks! That's good to know.

Another noob question… Where can I actually download the latest Beta? https://software.sil.org/fieldworks/download/fw-92/fw-925/ is to the 9.2. I don't see anything for 9.3.

I'm currently on 9.2.10 and would like to try the beta, especially if it is only a ~200mb patch.

Sorry for the double post…

I did find this page: https://software.sil.org/fieldworks/download/fw-93/fw-935/ Is that what you meant to link to?

Is it possible to keep my 9.2.10 installation and install the beta as well? I assume they can't both be running at the same time, but that's all right.

Yes, that’s the right page, I’m sorry for my mix-up.

You can only install one version of FieldWorks at a time.

To install this patch, you will need to install version 9.3.5 first. Then install the patch.

Is this the right place to report issues or ask questions?

With the "Create and Edit" button. First, I can't seem to paste anything, even though typing works fine. (I'm on Windows 11)

And I'm curious about what I think are new icons here:

2026-02-11 19_35_09-screenshot.png

I don't remember there being the blue and tan boxes or the checks and x'es. I'm guessing that blue is the regular guessing and the tan is the parser? And that the check means approved and the x means rejected? And nothing means neither? They don't seem to be clickable.

Great news that the font rendering is now perfectly clear in most places. However in the dictionary preview and the full dictionary rendering they are still the old way and quite fuzzy. But where it renders correctly now: Wow! It's amazing.

Thanks for all the hard work!

This is the right place to ask questions about things you don’t understand (e.g., the new icons). Issues you’re encountering can be presented here for input from others, in case someone else has found a way to do something you’ve been unable to do. But in general, it’s most helpful to report issues to FLEx_...@sil.org. That ensures that the right people are made aware of your experience, concern, and point of view.

Regarding the new icons, these were introduced in FW 9.3 (not sure exactly which sub-version, but it was a little while ago). They were added at the request of users who are implementing one of the automated parsers that ships with FLEx. Here are their meanings, as best I remember them from the discussion leading up to their implementation (and pretty much as you surmised):

blue background – shows the status of the analysis in question based on what FLEx finds in the lexicon and/or what you have told FLEx about that analysis as you’ve analyzed texts up to the current time.

tan background – shows the status of the analysis in question according to the active parser, based on the current configuration of the lexicon and grammar

A check mark with a blue background indicates that the form exists in the lexicon or you have approved that analysis previously in a text somewhere.

A blue background with no icon indicates that FLEx does not know what you think of that analysis.

A tan background with a red X indicates that the active parser is unable to validate that analysis, given the lexical and grammatical details currently supplied.

A tan background with a check mark indicates that the active parser is able to validate that analysis, given the lexical and grammatical details currently supplied.

Hope that helps,

Kevin Warfel
