I'm trying to running FLEx on my Mac (10.10.3 Yosemite), and hoping that WineBottler would be able to repackage the program to work on the Mac system. WineBottler did a great job for Toolbox.

So far my attempts to run a FLEx install into the wine bottle are coming up against an error message consistently: "... program appears to be running in a Compatibility Mode that is different from the real operating system ..." Full message attached.

Does anyone else have experience with this? Or even better, a solution?

I've found two previous threads on this topic, both of them inconclusive:

John,

Many years ago, after seeing the SIL product page which said that Toolbox didn’t work on a Mac, I too tried Winebottler, and was surprised at how easy it was to make it work. That memory has caused me too, to try using Wine or CrossOver Mac to run FLEx on a Mac.

I suspect, however, that SIL Fieldworks depends on an API which simply isn’t implemented in Wine (WinForms?), so there’s no install tricks which would make it work. Either FieldWorks or Wine would need major code changes.

It would be helpful to have it posted somewhere exactly which API is lacking, so that I don’t wonder each time I see a new Wine or FieldWorks release. I recently added FieldWorks to the CrossOver compatibility database—mostly to remind MYSELF that it doesn’t work, so I don’t waste time trying again!

I was wondering if it would be possible to install the Linux version of FieldWorks using Homebrew or MacPorts, but I’ve never actually investigated what it would require. How long is the list of dependencies on Fieldworks Linux?

Eric

I'm not familiar with WineBottler, but others have tried using WINE, and FieldWorks does not work there, although Toolbox did.

Basically, WINE is an emulator (in spite of its name?), and FLEx only runs on actual versions of Windows.  There are three virtual machine programs that people have used successfully with real Windows and FLEx: Parallels, VMware, and VirtualBox.  BootCamp also works.  Basically anything that involves installing real Windows.

FieldWorks also runs in Linux, specifically the Ubuntu flavors (Precise and Trusty right now), as well as the Linux Mint versions (since they are built on the Ubuntu ones) (Linux Mint 13 maya, Linux Mint 17 qiana, Linux Mint 17.1 rebecca).  And it runs on debian.

Sorry that is probably not what you wanted to hear.

This isn't the solution you want, but I use BootCamp and boot to Windows to work on our database.  Works great except for having to reboot, but that's been well worth having FLEx work reliably and getting to use it on what is physically my Mac.  I had a student who used the virtual machine approach successfully, I think.

Just to clarify there are 3 ways to run Windows software on a Mac:
1. Wine/Winebottler
2. Virtual Machine with Windows installed (VMware, Parallels, VirtualBox)
3. Rebooting into Windows (Boot Camp)

Wine isn’t really a virtual machine but has the lowest overhead in terms of disk space and separation of systems. Virtual Machines let you run Windows in a window, slightly integrated with your Mac but fairly separate. These first 2 solutions let you use Mac and Windows software simultaneously. Wine is least likely to work for more complex software but worth trying for some very popular software since others may have worked to make it happen. Every piece of windows software I’ve tried works in a virtual machine which is (to all the software inside it) a full PC.

I've ended up going with the VMware option now. This mostly works well, though it's pretty heavy on the system.
