I created custom fields for various aspectual stems of verbs (e.g., perfective and irrealis).  I am wondering if I can, in some automated way, create variants for the main verb entries using this info.  For example, I would want the perfective stem of a verb (which is already entered in a custom field for the verb's main entry) to be created as a perfective variant for the verb (a minor entry tied to the verb's main entry). Is there a way to do this?  By the way, one complication is that, in most cases, an audio file accompanies most of the aspectual stems (it is entered as an audio vernacular "writing" system, in parallel with the written writing system).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S. If you're curious about why I am doing this, I am thinking that it would be helpful to have at least some of the aspectual stems be listed separately in the dictionary, and I don't believe I can do that using my current system.

What you are wanting makes sense and seems right to me, but I don’t think you can do it via the FLEx UI. I think someone would have to create a FLExTools script for you to use. I’m happy to be proven wrong, but that’s what I think.

Best wishes,

Kevin

The variant generator add-on custom utility might be of help.  See https://github.com/sillsdev/FLExAllomorphGenerator/blob/master/VariantGeneratorDll/doc/VarGenUserDocumentation.pdf for the documentation.  The installer is at https://github.com/sillsdev/FLExAllomorphGenerator/blob/master/InstallerVarGen/Output/VariantGeneratorDllSetup.exe (which is for the latest Beta version of FLEx; you might need an earlier version depending on what version of FLEx you are using).

This looks very interesting, Andy.

Thanks so much for the suggestion.  I’ll give it a try.

Best,

Mike

Thanks for getting back to me on this Kevin.

Let’s see what others say (in case there is a way to do this using the FLEX UI).

Best,

Mike
