I'm teaching a daily FLEx component in a language workshop that started today (Oklahoma Breath of Life, Silent No More Workshop), and one of the language groups decided that their week-long project would be to create a small lexicon that (1) has audio with all the entries and (2) is organized by semantic domains (they want to create their own in Lists based on how their culture would categorize things) and (3) that they can publish on the web as a sample product at the end of the week.

So this evening I'm running a test through Lexique Pro to Web, and it appears that the categorized view is not available for data exported from FLEx to Lexique Pro.

Can anyone help me in a hurry? We were concerned about getting this group to buy into FLEx - their group leader didn't think it would be useful. But the young people in the group were quite enthusiastic.

If anyone knows a workaround to get semantic domains to show up in a LexiquePro project imported from FLEx - so that semantic domains can then go on the web as one of the organizing views - I would be extremely grateful.

(Another thing about this group: They have little interest in print publication. They have a lot of young, technology-savvy language learners, so telling them that FLEx is great but you can't put most of your stuff in a web dictionary will probably mean they we've lost them.)

Thanks.

Yes Josh, I also discovered the same problem and I'm still not sure WHY Lexique Pro does not allow the LIFT export from FLEx to display semantic domains.

My work-around is/was to export to SFM (instead of LIFT) and then configure Lexique Pro to display whatever you want. It is a bit more work doing the configuration in Lexique Pro, but at least you're totally in control! And, yes the audio exports to the online version as well.

Have fun!

I would be very interested in getting a copy of your database. I am very interested in how cultures categorize their words.

Thanks,

Mark, this is super-helpful.

I can get the Semantics Domains and then configure them in Lexique Pro. I can also get the Pictures. But I'm not getting the sound links. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Josh, first check whether FLEx is exporting the correct path to the sound files (and that they actually exist at that location). Then make sure that Lexique Pro knows which marker is being used for those sound files. Once Lexique Pro knows about the sound files, it should show an icon within Lexique Pro which you can click to hear the sound byte. Finally, when exporting to the Web page, you will need to make sure that the option to include Audio is checked.

I'm on a borrowed computer without Lex Pro trying to answer your question from memory (and "in theory") - so take my advice with a pinch of salt! ... and do your own digging if I'm still missing the target :)

So the problem is that the Media File field doesn't get exported (I've looked at the output file itself, and that field definitely isn't making it). I've used the various SFM export options, no luck. (There's a Configure Dictionary SFM export. When using that, I first went to the Dictionary Configuration dialog to attempt to select the Media File field as visible, but that field can't be part of the Configured Dictionary.)

So all I can think right now is to Bulk Copy the Media FIle to some other (unused) field that WILL get exported, then do a find-replace routine to switch out the format marker.

Is there a better way? A direct way to get the Media File field to export? (7.2.4)

Thanks!

And now that I've tried to Bulk Copy from the Media File field, I see that this, too, is impossible, because the Media File field doesn't show up in the list of Column Options!

Any advice from anyone?

Joah,

How are you storing the media files? If you are using the Media File under Pronunciations, it looks like we are not providing decent support for that in bulk edit or exports.

We do better with the relatively new audio writing system. At least these can be configured in dictionary view and exported using the xhtml option. Pathway provides other types of output from the xhtml, but it would require some work to get that into Lexique Pro. At least there is enough metadata in the file that you could conceivably write a CC table or use some similar method to convert that into a SFM file. The audio writing system can be used on the Pronunciation form, Lexeme Form, Example Sentence, and most any other field. To use it you need to go to Writing System Properties and add a new writing system and choose Audio as the variant name. It then allows you to record directoy from a microphone, or connect to an audio file. For the latter, it copies it into your project directory and gives it a generated name.

I don't know if this will help, but maybe you can make it work this way.

Ken
