I think this is possible (at least we've been doing it on one system already) but I'd like confirmation. Is it okay to have both FLEx 6 and 7 installed on the same system? I have student data that has been entered in some version of 6 (not completely certain which one right now) and some student data that has been entered in 7.0 or in 7.2. I need to make sure that for now the data done in 6 stays in 6 format. However, I do not want to run THREE versions of FLEx on my machine and so plan on installing 7.2 in addition to the 6.x version I already have on my computer so I can mark student projects. I do not intend on opening both versions at the same time but need to know that in fact there will not be some sort of weird problem that will result by having both installations on my computer.

Thanks,

Coleen

It is fine to have both version 6.x and 7.x on your computer. You can
even run them both at the same time. What you need to make sure of is
that you do not edit a project in version 7 that you need to keep in
version 6, and that you do not accidentally open an old of a project
in version 6 that you now edit in version 7... If you can arrange
things so you don't struggle to keep that straight, all will be well.
(Note: We do not currently allow two versions of version 7.x to be
installed simultaneously.)

Coleen,

You can have both FW6 and FW7 installed on the same system, but you have to be careful how you use them.  If a database gets opened in FW7, it can no longer be opened by FW6.  (In fact, the same is true of a FW7.1 database that gets opened in FW7.2; it can no longer be opened by FW7.1.)  The best way to keep from ‘painting yourself into a corner’ like that is to have created a backup before opening a given database in a new version of FieldWorks.  Then, if you have to, you can always restore from the backup into the version in which it was originally created.  It is also my understanding that, in order to restore a FW6 backup in FW7, you must have FW6 installed (though you don’t actually have to launch it yourself; the Restore process will use it).

So in your case, you should make sure that each student has created a backup from the version s/he was working in, and then pass that backup to you.  If you don’t need to return projects with corrections to the students, you could restore each of them in FW7.2 (or whatever version you choose) to look at what they’d done.  You just wouldn’t be able to pass back to them a changed version of their database that they would be able to open.

Hoping this is helpful,

Kevin

There is a Flex Lite that can be installed if all you want to do is convert version 6.x databases to 7.x databases.  Version 7.x uses this minimum 6.x installation to do the conversion, and reduces the footprint of version 6.x

Thanks all for your responses. Now that you mentioned it, I remember that with one of the computers we did have to have 6 installed in order to restore a project within 7. I had forgotten about that. Also, I am aware of the incapability issues between earlier and later versions. We've run into that in our lab before. So, I was indeed planning on doing what Kevin suggested: have back-ups. Coleen

I try to add the version number of FLEx to the names of my Projects. That helps me know which version I used. So all of my files now have FLEx 723 at the end.

I keep my backups in folders that have the version numbers on them:

My FieldWorks/Backups/FW6.0.6
My FieldWorks/Backups/FW6.0.6XML
My FieldWorks/Backups/FW7.0.4
My FieldWorks/Backups/FW7.2.4

This way I can tell which version I used to make the backup. The FW6.0.6XML folder is for projects where I checked "Create an XML version". These are the backups that FW7 can restore without needing FW 6 installed.

I find this more helpful to than putting it in the project name, because the project gets migrated each time I open it in a newer version. I typically use the same project throughout many different versions of FLEx.

That's a good idea. That means you have less to scan thru when opening or restoring Flex.

Actually, the situation where this approach is good:

is when you have two different versions of FLEx running at the same time, like what Coleen will have with FLEx 6 and FLEx 7.

Just in case anyone missed it in the context of her other suggestion,
I'd like to reiterate the little poing Beth made right in the middle:

You don't need FW6 or FLEx Lite in order to restore a backup from FW6,
*if* you checked the XML box when making the backup.

In many cases, this will be quite sufficient.
