I want to do something like what’s here (from Webster online—this is my target output look when published, of course) in Flex:

Illinois can be pronounced in two different ways (just focus on the pronunciation fields numbered (1) and (2) ).

For my project, our team wants to promote some standardization,  using orthographic writing system, but provide different ways pronouncing the same word by different dialects in different regions, e.g.

[xabuyša]

[xabuša]

Both pronunciations are for the same word: ܚܵܒܘܿܫܵܐ which means an ‘apple’ in English. The different pronunciations reflect regional dialectal variation. Some of the pronunciations cannot be reproduced using the orthographic writing system but can only be accurately represented by the phonetic writing system.

How do I do this in Flex?

Just so you know, the vernacular language is Assyrian (aii) and the Analysis language is in Assyrian and English (sort of multilingual) dictionary.

My needs:

  1. I need the pronunciation in IPA.
  2. Is it possible to have multiple pronunciation fields with ‘dialect’ label as a prefix, so we know which pronunciation is associated with which dialect?
  3. I would prefer not to have a comma separated one field to cover all the pronunciation in the database; mind you the presentation, of course, will assemble all the pronunciations in comma separated display as shown in the example cited above from Webster.

Thanks,

Sargon

************ I retract this question.***************

I figured out how to do this. It turned out to be straight forward configuration in FLEX. Thanks to your documentation ‘Intro to lexicography’ section 4.2.9, ‘Filing in the Pronunciation field’.

Sargon
