Paragraphs in an entry

I realize that there are supposed to be some features in FieldWorks now for having some separate paragraphs in an entry. I see the checkbox in Subentries, to make them a separate paragraph. But I am working on a project where the Cross References are also being shown in separate paragraphs. They export as "Main Entry-Continue" paragraph style, but I don't see where that configuration is made. Can someone help me?

And more broadly, is there any documentation on this new feature, and where would I find it?

Thanks,
Jeff

Well, I would think there must be something more, unless it is only by virtue of the fact that the cross references (and entry level variants) appear after the senses that they appear in separate paragraphs. That would sort of make sense with the use of the "Main Entry-Continue" paragraph style.

But I thought the changes that were to be made to FieldWorks were to help dictionary layout designers to be able to use paragraphs more intelligently (e.g. for contexts like dictionary apps, where you want to spread information out more). I'm pretty sure that we had the "Display each sense in a paragraph" checkbox before... so what is the new functionality? Or has it not been released yet?

Hi, Jeff.

There are a couple things:

1. If you are using the Hybrid layout (formerly “config”), then these items are often in the [References Section] node, and that whole node is by default in a Separate Paragraph.  (Verna is working on a lesson in the DLS course about “grouping nodes”, which is what the [References Section] node is.)

2. The functionality you are referring to is something that needs to be done kind of “behind the scenes” or by hand-editing the .config file.  Jason has the details on how to do that; I don’t remember the specifics, and I’m pretty sure they didn’t get into the Helps documentation.

Do you want to display an element in a new paragraph in the dictionary? Are you aware of the \a string which you put in the Before box? Is that what you mean?

Yes, I'm aware that you can force a line break, but that's not the same as a new paragraph. A manual line break just pushes the following text to the next line, BUT the paragraph settings (margins, line spacing, etc.) must be identical, because after all it is the same paragraph. It would be more helpful if there was a way to create new paragraphs within the entry, and I thought we were working towards that.

By the way, there is more discussion on this topic here: https://groups.google.com/g/flex-list/c/MGpB3De9jEM/m/OYQUzyhVDwAJ
