Dear all,
I like Flex a lot and we are generally doing fine. Today I was doing
some exports for my wife, something I wanted to do quickly to get back
to my own work.
Today was one time too many that the mouse wheel drove me "crazy". Is
this normal? Is this the way intended by the developers, or have I
configured something wrongly:
We are working a lot with "Texts & Words" in the "Word Analysis" view.
We are seeing long lists with thousands of entries depending on
filtering. In any other program on my computer the mouse wheel will
either scroll up or down or (if I so configure or if I press another
key) will zoom in or out.
In Flex the mouse wheel keeps grabbing the focus on the column "spelling
status" and when I wheel (sorry, it is just so natural) nothing happens.
In reality of course I have (again) changed some spelling status from
"correct" to any other status. Often I catch it, often I do not catch
it. Often I have a filter active which only shows correctly spelled
entries. And when I unwillingly change the spelling status of an entry,
depending on circumstances, the entry might even disappear from my
screen and then the error stays undetected and uncorrected.
- - Do you know this problem too?
- - Is it a problem or a feature? Am I too narrow minded expecting the
mouse wheel to be most useful for scrolling?
- - Can I configure it for Flex (found nothing in help)? Can I at least
dis-activate the wheel for Flex (maybe at Win 7 level)?
- - Are the developers interested in this kind of feedback? Hi, if you are
"old school" you might not have a mouse, right? :) Please try using(!)
Flex for several hours without a mouse, entering texts and parsing and
making and filling lexical entries. I would prefer that a lot. I tried
hard and I found many tricks but Flex is sadly not ready to be worked
without a mouse. (That should maybe be another thread.)
- - Is there a quick fix which will not force me to change my setup
entirely. I spend many hours on Flex and there is potentially a user who
will write "just remove the spelling status column from your screen".
Well, I could do that (I do not want to) but the programming just does
not "feel right":
Try it. Have your word analysis the way you like it. Include spelling
status. Put that column anywhere you like. Now click on any entry (click
not even into the column for spelling status but maybe into "form" or
"gloss"). Still the focus will go to the spelling status. And even if
you just happily scrolled up and down a moment ago: No more scrolling,
just changing spelling status up or down.
Considering that the list of choices for spelling status is only
correct/incorrect/undecided I do not really need the wheel there. For
most entries we never need to set that status anyway because that
happens in the process of importing and parsing texts. So the wheel
would be so much more useful for scrolling up and down.
- - What do you think?
- - Let us re-invent the wheel? ;)
Martin
