PAWS (https://software.sil.org/paws/) has been discussed a few times on this list and it looks like a very helpful tool for partially automating the process of writing a grammar paper.

Is there a way to export the PAWS linguistic examples into FLEx? The closest possibilities I can see are:
  • the SFM files, which appear to contain only the vernacular orthographic line, or
  • the XLingPaper examples in XML, though I’m not aware of an existing tool to transform that into .flextext XML
The reason I’m asking is that I would like to try out PAWS but I'm hesitant to make such an investment in entering all the data unless I can also access it in FLEx.

Hi, Tim.

It should be possible to create a way to map from the .paw file to something in the .flextext format.  You could then import that into FLEx.  It would only be the vernacular and free lines from the examples in PAWS.  In terms of text names, one possibility would be to create a new FLEx text for each top-level item from the .paw file.  This means there would be a text for the example items in typology section, a text for the examples in the qp section, etc.

If you want, you could fill out the first two or three sections of PAWS, get me your .paw file, and I'll get you a .flextext file based on that .paw file for you to import into FLEx to see if it might do what you need.

Does this help?
