Hi all,

We have some words in our lexicon that are inherently in quotation marks (ideophones that do not follow the normal syllable structure of the language). However, I want them to sort according to their first letter, not according to the quotation marks. I know that I should do this in ICU rules, but I don't know how to make the ICU rule that ignores the quotation mark (0022). Can someone help me?

The current ICU rule we have, which ignores word-forming apostrophes, is the following: &[last tertiary ignorable]=ʼ.

Thanks so much!
Susie

Hi Susie,

Why would you want to have them in quotation marks in the dictionary?
Aren't the quotation marks an orthographic device you use in texts to signal that these words have a different form?
Could the label 'idéophone' suffice in the dictionary to indicate that these words are different (as ideophones often are anyway)?

Yes, you can extend your existing rule by adding the double quotation mark:

&[last tertiary ignorable] = ʼ = '"'

This preserves your current treatment of the apostrophe (U+02BC) and also ignores the straight double quotation mark (U+0022) when sorting. FieldWorks documents this approach: separate the characters to ignore with = and enclose punctuation in single quotes.

In '"', the outer single quotes delimit the character; the double quotation mark between them is the character being ignored.

If your entries also contain curly double quotation marks, include those as well:

&[last tertiary ignorable] = ʼ = '"' = '“' = '”'

The quotation marks will remain visible in your entries, but the words will sort according to their letters.

Thank you, Jean Paul! That worked!
Carin, I will respond privately by e-mail. Thanks for your thoughts, too. :)
