FLEx Parser Workshop Announcement

“I made much more significant headway in understanding how to use the FLEx Hermit Crab parser in those few days of the workshop than I did in multiple years of trying it on my own in spurts and only interacting with FLEx experts about it over email.”

(See here for quotes from other participants in the Aug 2023 Parser Workshop)

Many agree that FLEx is among the most powerful tools for language analysis available today. Yet few can use it to its fullest extent–especially the XAmple and HermitCrab parsing tools.

The translation quality of any language is greatly improved when parsers are used, since they point out inconsistent writing, help determine word breaks, check words for grammatical consistencies, and contribute in many ways to the grammatical analysis of the language. When Paratext is integrated with FLEx, the quality of translation can dramatically increase through the rigorous application of these parsers. In addition, the number of organizations using machine translation is rapidly increasing, and parsing is foundational for rule-based machine translation.

In the FLEx Parser Workshop, you will learn how to set up the FLEx parsers for analyzing the morphology of a specific language. Not only will there be software experts to train you in all the possible features of the parsers, there will also be language experts to guide you in tailoring the parsers to the specific features of the language. With no more than three language teams assigned to each workshop facilitator, the goal is that each trainee will receive adequate mentoring to successfully set up the parsers of their assigned project language.

Participants: This workshop is for translators, field linguists or other language personnel who assist a translation or language development project and need assistance to set up the FLEx parsers for a more efficient project.

Location: International Linguistics Center in Dallas, TX USA

Dates: 12-23 Aug 2024
