I am working with a project that has just over 1100 audio files, made in language forge. I was assuming that syncing language forge with FLEx and then exporting it all to DAB would be possible. But the sound files are not showing up in DAB. Discussion on the DAB site seems to imply that only files actually recorded in FLEx itself can be exported to DAB. Is that correct? Not even files made in Language Forge?
What is the difference (e.g. in the xml) between files created through FLEx's recording versus those created in Language Forge and downloaded through send/receive?
How do you suggest we proceed here?

Hi Claire,

Thanks for posting this.  I think what you are trying to do (record in Language Forge -> sync with Flex -> export to DAB) should work for audio files.  I would have to double-check but I think FLEx only records as WAV, but will playback WAV, MP3 and WEBM/OPUS audio files.  Language Forge can record in either WAV or WEBM/OPUS.  I'm less sure what audio playback formats DAB supports.  Since it's not working for you, I'd like to dig in and understand what the issue is.  If you could email me directly we can correspond on this issue.  If there is conversation about this over on the DAB site please also send me a link to that, thanks!

Hi Claire,
About 8 months ago, Bart E and I were working through how to get our respective DAB projects to play audio hosted externally on the web.  I'm wondering if some of the issues we discussed there might still be applicable for the problems you're having.  Here's the thread link:

I don't use Language Forge and so am less familiar with the import process into Flex. But what I can confirm is that files do not have to be recorded in Flex in order to be exported to DAB.  However, externally recorded audio does have to be properly linked by file name to each entry within Flex otherwise the Flex info in DAB doesn't recognize it.  The thread above also contains a bit about best practices for doing that.

As Chris said below, Flex does only record as WAV but can playback other formats.  I have had success with DAB using WAV and MP3.  It claims support for webm, but I have not tried to use it.

Thanks Chris!

I believe that DAB supports all three of wav, mp3 and webm (but it’s a bit unclear); there’s a help page that says you can convert flex wav files to mp3 and upload them to DAB and it should work (DAB apparently ignores the suffix as long as the filenames are identical). I’ve successfully done that for wav > mp3 to reduce size in a DAB apk package. However, converting from webm to mp3 and uploading didn’t work.

(Replying on the forum since this information might be relevant to others but I’ll also email you separately)

Hi Dave,
Thanks for this - I'll look into what the xml looks like for the links. It would be odd if Language Forge doesn't link correctly for FLEx, though

Hi Chris,
Sorry for sending this to the whole list but I'm unable to email you directly as the list hides your email address.
