Switching to Texts & Words Performance Issues

Noticed Issue: Switching from Lexicon tab to Texts & Words tab is taking considerable time (relatively speaking); I measured it to be about 53 seconds. I am not sure why:

1. My project is on a local drive (not a on a network drive, i.e. no NAS), so there shouldn't be, in theory, any disk latency.
2. Does the size of my text corpus matter? I have a Partial bible text (old & new testaments) in Modern Assyrian (neo-Aramaic)  and some additional misc. text loaded. Here is what Flex is reporting:
   Texts & Words Statistics (using chosen texts)
       Total number of unique words (types):    30369
       Assyrian:    30369
       Total word count (tokens):    207347
       Assyrian:    207347
       Total number of sentences (segments):    30280
   
   Q: does this report the whole text corpus size? I presume, yes. Not sure what FLEX is referring to 'using chosen texts'. It doesn't report on a single text, does it?

I also see the issue when selecting Concordance/Search and clicking on each 'Concordance Results' is also taking noticeable delay displaying Analyze tab content.

Now you may say a  one-time 53 seconds switch between the two tabs is not bad but doing it multiple times during a working session is quite painful to the point of non-workable. 

Why am I switching back and forth, you may ask?

Well, it seems, unfortunately, in the Interlinear Text/Analyze tab, clicking on 'Edit Lexical Entry', the 'Lexical Edit Popup' won't allow you add additional senses. It only allows edits. So to add additional senses (my use case in this example) I need to switch to Lexicon tab. Hence the pain!

Any help to figure out the reason for this issue is greatly appreciated.

I have noticed that loading a large text takes a significant amount of time when I am on the Analyze tab.

Exactly which version of FieldWorks are you using? That would be a helpful detail to know.

Hi Sargon,

Unfortunately, I don't have any response about the question on the performance problem you report. I agree that having to wait almost a minute for your screen to build up is not acceptable if that needs to happen many times in your workflow. I hope an improvement can be found for that.

I'm not sure if this helps you, but in fact it is possible to add a sense directly from the Analyze tab. For that you need to click on the little black downward triangle next to each morpheme in the "Lex. Entries" line of a word. Then you'll see a context menu that allows you to add another sense to your entry without having to go to the Lexicon area of FLEx.

I realize that the window you see from this context menu is not very flexible, so you may still need to go to the Lexicon for further adjustments to the new sense. Then this information will not solve your problem.

Have you tried using more than one Window?  In FLEx, you can use the Window menu item / New Window.  Have one window be on Lexicon and the the other be on Text & Words.  Then try switching back and forth between the two windows.  Does that make a difference?

@andreas, Yes, that works even though it's not a full entry popup. I must've missed it.

@kevin, here is the version:

@andy, opening a second window works and is more convenient.

Hopefully, someone can diagnose the corpus size issue, if it's related to that.

You asked about the 'chosen texts': from View / Choose Texts, one can select / deselect texts. The statistics only count those texts that are listed as selected in this dialog.

Ah, thanks! I wasn't aware of 'choose...'  option :( In that case, here is my updated stats:

    Assyrian:    33763
    Total word count (tokens):    256486

Wow, I tried tinkering with a New Window and it could be really useful for some things. Wish I had discovered that years ago!
