Hi dear Flex-User,

I work on the Mimi language (Nilo-Saharan) in Chad.

Here is my problem: I would like to have information on the spelling status of words in the lexicon. All words which have NOT been marked manually as verified orthographically either directly in the lexicon or in texts would be underlined in red.

I see in Tools, under Spelling, that there is an option to that effect (Show Vernacular Spelling Errors), but in my FLEX version (9.2) it does not produce anything.

I have build a vernacular spell checker working on texts. But how to carry this information over to the Lexicon?

It seems that the Spell checker does not work for the Lexicon in my FLEX version.

Did I miss something?

Greetings

Hi John,

I ran into this problem too, but not all fields in the lexicon area will reveal spelling errors. Not all fields are in the vernacular language. Example sentences and the citation form show spelling errors.  So do glosses, notes and definition, though the dictionary might be different.

Hi Ann,

so to have a Spell Checker of the Lexeme Form field in the vernacular language. I can bulk-copy these forms in the Citation Form field. So I have a way to see in the Lexicon the decisions I have been taking about Spelling in the texts.

It is not very elegant but it works.

Thanks.

Greetings

Hi John,

Here’s my guess as to why spelling errors aren’t indicated in the Lexeme Form field:

In many languages, the Lexeme Form requires affixation in order to form a real word in the language. Examples: noun class prefixes in Bantu languages (among others), inalienable nouns. There would be lots of Lexeme Forms marked as incorrectly spelled, and that would be accurate.

So, for entries where the Lexeme Form can stand alone (and there is therefore no compelling reason to use the Citation Form field, from the standpoint of getting dictionary entries to display as desired), your assessment of the situation seems to be correct. Bulk editing them into the Citation Form field, while not necessary for display purposes, would then allow you to check on the spelling status.

Best wishes,

Kevin
