to Flex JS
...let's get this started.

I have been working with Flex since version 1.0 back in 2004 and still
use it almost every single day. Personally, I have not yet tried *any*
of the new JS frameworks myself (except jquery), I only researched
stuff and read through articles. Some people prefer knockout, other
backbone, then there is angularJS... wow. Lots of stuff, so there must
be something useful that allows for rapid and x-browser compatible
development, right?

Pretty quickly, It became clear to me that there is no "silver bullet"
JS framework right now that offers all the stuff we Flex-users are
used to have (data binding, custom components, MVC, DI) so people end
up picking parts from framework A and B and C and mix it up (watch the
versioning!)... and add some CSS... and more... sigh.

I know Joao dived into these frameworks recently, last time I heard
from him he admitted he did not dive but he drowned.

So: what have you guys tried? What does work and what does not?

Dirk.

to Flex JS
allright so here is my current status...

I`ve also worked with Flex since version one and actually started
my "programming" career with Flash 4. Haven`t done any serious
html work since 2002! I have to say coming back to this world does
not feels as bad as i would have thought :-)

So the first question i`m trying to work out is what`s the best editor
for me. I started with Webstorm but i`m not quite feeling it yet.
I also use Dreamweaver (yeah yeah yeah) a lot. I had mixed feelings
about
it as it generally does not get good reputation but there are some
things
i really like. The JQuery syntax completion, the webkit integration...
nice stuff.
Not sure yet if it will become my editor of choice but for small
experiments i like it.
Kind of strange if you think about how Flex started as a Dreamweaver
extension and
now i`m back right there :-) Heck i`m even thinking about an iPhone as
my next phone
and this after i made this blog post http://richapps.de/?p=269 ;-)
Times are changing...

Ok so i`m currently in the play state where i just read a lot of books
and try a lot of things.
Currently on my list is CoffeeScript - even if you don`t like it i
think it makes sense to learn
it a bit as a lot of libraries are written in it so i think it makes
sense to at least understand the sytax.

Then i`m checking out MVC frameworks. Currently my favorite is
backbone.js but that`s probably only
cause i`ve spend most time with it. I like that it gives you complete
freedom of how you render your views.
I plan to take a deeper look at angular, knockout and JavaScriptMVC as
well.

Other than that i love playing with CSS3 transitions and
transformations. Some really cool stuff you can do there
(if you target the right browsers :-))

My day job is still 100% flash platform stuff for parleys.com. There
we have a desktop AIR video editor, a website,
android/ipad tablet apps an embeddable share client, a desktop
client... Replacing all this stuff with html5/css is quite a challenge
but the signals are already clear that my client wants that even if
this means sacrificing some (or lot`s of) features.
So for me it`s not a question if i will do a lot of HTML/JS/CSS work
it`s only about how to make it work.
Especially video is a big pain for us...

Oh yeah lot´s of challenges but as Flash ninjas nobody loves and knows
to work around limitations better than us right!

Allright that`s the current status - i`ll try to start soe more
specific discussions later (i think stuff like books, editors,
frameworks...)

Hi everyone,
I personally started like 4 years ago, using Flex 2.0.1 I believe.

Right now, my company is moving away from Flex because instead of doind intranet apps, we will do more and more web/cloud/whatever apps. So, doing Flex all day long, I'm a bit late on the latest web techs. I see much stuff on Twitter but nothing really that would help me build real medium/large sized applications.
I will launch a blog very soon (html5-tutorial.fr) to share my experiments, just like i did 4 years ago with flex-tutorial.fr
For the record, stuff I will use at work:
- Server side : J2EE stack + OSGi, Hadoop + Postgres
- Client side : Google Closure tools (compiler, templates, stylesheet, ...)
Stuff i plan to experiment on my blog:
- Server Size : Play! Framework, not really bothered about the DB
- Client side : Google Closure tools (not sure wether they are great or not), Backbone, jQuery

I'm also going to give IntelliJ a shot for web development because the support for both web and Play seems great. I feel a bit lost at the moment because of using Eclipse for so long but it will surely get better.

I am surely going to get mad at XX browser support but I know it already, so it should hurt less :). GMail and GMaps are flipping web apps, so it must be possible to create such awesome web apps, right ? ;)

regarding Play! - have you tried it already? It looks very promising I think

(sorry, if this is slightly OT as Play! is not just JS but more a Java
/ Scala based web application framework with lots of nice and fresh
ideas)

Dirk.

So..... Here's my answer:

@Dirk It's not really OT. I tried Play and i just loved it. I mean really, take one hour and do the official introduction tutorial, you won't regret it. In one hour, you don't create some stupid "Hello World", you create a full blog engine, with an admin, customization, i18n, tests, all of that. I also love the templating engine, a lot more powerful than JS templating engine that insert <li> in <ul> tags mostly

I have one question to do about my post. When will the shit storm from the JS fanboys start? I've wrote before about JS and got attacked from all sides. Will I survive this one? :o)

They can't really deny most of what you say, really. But if you keep using your mail client and your signature that mess up the whole google groups online reading experience, you might get the shit storm from me ! haha

Great article tho, you must have spent hours writing it
