Hello Fletcher North Korea Working Group!

Wanted to pass this great opportunity along.  If you're interested, please reach out to Soohyun Choi directly at Soohyu...@tufts.edu.

------

I'm starting an e-mentoring/tutoring program for North Korean defector youth with my friend Michelle (cc'd here), and I wanted to know if anyone in the North Korea Working Group is interested in being organizers or mentors.

The basic idea is: Volunteer mentors from Fletcher (and Harvard) will be matched with North Korean youth who have defected to South Korea. Primarily, mentors will help mentees reach their English learning goals, an important academic challenge that they face, while developing a meaningful mentoring relationship.

Michelle who graduated from Harvard Graduate School of Education last year is the mastermind of the program, and she will be the contact point in South Korea. She reached out to Yeomyung School, a school for North Korean defector youth in SK, and there are students who are interested in participating in the program. Michelle is also teaching a class at Yeomyung over the winter to get to know the students, and get a better sense of what they want and need.

I will be the contact point here, recruit mentors at Fletcher, and do anything necessary to run the program smoothly from this part of the world. Also, students/graduates from HGSE will recruit mentors from Harvard or other places.

We would like to begin the program in March (which is when the academic year starts in South Korea). We are open to ideas/feedback or any help that we can get in planning. Please let me know if you are interested! Thanks!

Sincerely,

Soo
