I just had a long conversation with DJ (djmartin (at) ameritech.net).
It was really funny yet again to hear how much someone's voice can
change. Like John Dorfman, DJ's voice has taken on a real radio
talkshow host quality. I think it's from his years of yoga.

DJ told me that he is basically living in Manhattan (around Columbus
Circle -- so we'll be getting together soon) and is currently writing
a partially autobiographical novel, his first. He used to do a lot of
rock climbing, taking him on occasion to New Paltz (before I'd moved
here). He went to Trinity and then Princeton.

DJ has kept in close touch with Guy, so we'll soon have Mr
Maxtone-Graham on our list. Guy can finally put to rest the question
of where his arm injury happened (10 or 35).

Tho we have yet to speak, I have had a lot of email exchanges with
Peri Erlanger Nielsen. She's lawyering out in California, where she's
made partner, and has a really cute 6yo daughter named Somerset. I
sent her back what I thought was a beautiful shot of my three kids,
but the next morning it turned out that I had sent a beautiful photo
of a duck. Peri went to Fleming thru 4th grade and has wonderful
memories of school. She can be reached at peritopia (at) gmail.com

I tried to include the photo of Somerset, but it was apparently too large.

When Guy joins our list I will have to apologize to him. Actually, I should apologize to DJ too. I have vivid memories of being very, very mean to Guy and DJ at times as well. I think Mary and John and I wrote a whole book with caricatures of Guy--and of course one day he found it. It's embarrassing to think how cruel I was.

Wow. I always thought that I was the mean one. I guess we're all like
those people on the "Orient Express" -- all of them guilty (well,
maybe not all of us).

For a few years, I hesitated in trying to dredge up names for this
list because I was too afraid to face the meannesses I'd perpetrated
all those years ago. I was mean to Guy (I remember tripping him on the
roof and not getting into trouble for it bc I was so good at looking
innocent, tho he got bloody knees and palms for that one). I gave
Kelben and Philip a hard time about their religion (I've been an
atheist since 3). I was probably tough on a few other people, too.
Generally I think that a lot of us were like this, and I guess the
realization of this is what allows us all to have so many fond
memories of Fleming -- enough to outweigh the ones we'd rather let go.
I'm really glad I contacted all of you. It's been a hoot and a joy,
and the feeling of all of these memories flooding back is unreal.

Howdy,
I thought I had joined the group -- but my original messages must have gone into the Internet vortex.  Anyway, here's a tidbit: I kept in touch with Spencer Angel because he ended up marrying my BEST FRIEND Alexis Summer!  They now live in Miami, married 12 years with two kids Sophia (10) and Josh (8).  After a stint as a CEO of a publicly-traded healthcare company, Spencer is now in the deal-making business.

I echo the sentiments expressed, particularly about how vivid memories from Fleming are.  Not sure why I remember the Munster cheese sandwiches...or the time we were doing some kind of play where I think Kelben and I were supposed to be Shakespearean guards and our lines were, "halt, who goes there."  Instead of saying that, though, Kelben just threw up.

Yes, Mark, I think I was afraid of you. Although, from a distance. I don't think you ever did anything to me personally. But see, that fear did not stop me from being mean myself when I had the chance, to other people! Children can be cruel.

Oh no, I was cruel. We had a book called the Book of Yug (Guy backwards) with horrible pictures and I think a few times we tried to slip milk into his lunchbox, knowing he was wildly allergic. I remember when he found the book and cried and cried. The year before I had been cruelly teased for months by two people who will go nameless.... this was how I repaid the experience, by finding someone else to terrorize.

Hi Peri - I'd love to get in touch with Spencer since I'm not too far from Miami hear in West Palm Beach.  Do we have his contact info?  By the way, I'm pretty sure I threw up when it was my turn to say my lines for a French play, not a Shakespearean one.  At least it was only practice!

Well, Peri, I was getting all of the emails you sent to me, but I
didn't see any others, so maybe they DID go to the vortex.

Peri, you are going to FREAK when you read this, but Alexis Summer was
my first crush (later came Blair Schwartz, and then Diana Capaldi). I
invited her to my birthday party, and at the last second she decided
not to come, presumably because I was too immature for her (which was
true). I remember putting down the phone (in the kitchen) and walking
back to my room and crying. It nearly ruined my birthday, which wasn't
easy bc my bday is Halloween. This was when I was nine. Alexis was
always really tall and was at least once a rat in the Met's famous
"Nutcracker" ballet. Her parents and mine were friends (was one of
them a shrink like mine?). She grew up in the Dakota, where the
elevator took ten seconds per floor (no joke -- I was always timing
everything); if you had to pee when you got in and you lived on the
7th floor, you didn't when you got out. She had one of the biggest
(and tallest) apartments I've ever seen, with gigantic ceilings. I
wrote part of my 3rd grade report on Abe Lincoln at her house bc I
hadn't finished it ahead of time and we were sposed to have dinner at
the Summers the night before it was due. Phew.

David, you forgot the part where I dodged sniper fire:)  actually I was summarily rejected by Princeton -- I went to Cornell.

I heard that Mr. Johnson was crushed bet. two buses on Madison Ave while riding his bike home -- and I remember him as being one my very favorite teachers and way too good and young do have this fate befall him..

Also, in our conversation you mentioned that Chuck Borhuis was our 4th grade teacher, but he was also our 7th grade teacher and I just found a copy of our Seventh Grade Poetry Anthology for which I will be accepting bribes not to publish!  I remember him brining in a record of Galway Kinnell reading from his works (i think this was in 6th grade as it was the same room where Mark established Markonia): one of the lines was something like, 'as i was sucking the sweat from your armpit,'  which upon hearing caused us to immediately heap loud ridicule on Maude who was mortified, ignorant as we were of how talented her dad actually was (to quote Wikipedia: Galway Kinnell (born February 1st, 1927 in Providence, Rhode Island) is one of the most influential American poets of the latter half of the 20th century)

Yes, the evil things I did to others stick in my mind far more than those
done to me. Cordelia Roosevelt is the one I feel truly guilty about
(eventually she will read this, I hope...). I think we made quite a few
"new kids" leave very quickly (then again I was there continuously from
nursery school, so everyone was a new kid to me). However, I do remember
with pleasure kicking various boys in the shins, and terrible things done
to ties (the ruby, the emerald, and so on through all the birthstones).
And the pussy dodgeball my nine-year-old plays now makes me laugh! Those
half-inflated balls ruin all the fun.

And French lunch involved bringing in French food, how could you forget,
Cloudy? I always brought in crepes, some made without milk for Guy. And
someone else always brought in nougat, which I remember was very important
to Mark, who had some kind of "nougat corner."

I loaded up a couple of pictures of the family to the website (at least
those who would consent to be photographed, the dog acted like she was
being electrocuted), since they were too big to attach.

Here is a weird coinkidink: My wife, Shirra Rockwood Stone, went to
camp Treetops. When I read to her from DJ's note about Maud's dad's
poem, Shirra realized that I was talking about her friend from camp.
Shirra also went to Columbia Prep, btw, after a few disastrous years
at Bankstreet School.

And as I have already mentioned, John Dorfman's wife and I have been
in touch about at least one student from my tutoring. And Peri's best
friend was my first crush.

I wonder what other coincidences are lurking out there -- probably dozens.

You were obviously there longer than I was.  My only theatrical memory is of being a squirrel in second or third grade.  I do remember very vividly wanting to throw up though, so I sympathize with Kelben.  I also remember the Judo exhibitions in the big gym and specifically Spencer throwing me and me being really proud of the wonderful slap I gave the mat on my fall only to realize that I had just lost the match.  I think I became a significantly more competitive athlete because of that moment.

Speaking of our theatrical experiences, I remember Little Moon, but I
don't recall the name of the play that we had to learn rhyming lines
to. Was that LM also or a different play? And there was definitely a
play we put on in French. I think that's the one where I had to wear
tights, which I hated.

And speaking of poor Kelben's stomach, I remember that he once threw
up in 4th or 5th grade in the classroom. People separated their desks
around the spill while the teacher cleaned up the floor. There was
that terrible bilious smell in that back right corner of the room.
While the desks were still a few feet apart, Darryl asked if I could
get her a pencil just past that vomit area, and I gallantly
acquiesced. To avoid the still-wet floor, I placed my hands on the
nearby desks so that I could swing my feet over the puddle,
inadvertently placing my left hand in some puke.

Tony- I remember you from those Judo classes, and unfortunately being paired up with you in a match once or twice.  I made it to green belt in judo, but gave it up after one exhibition in the big gym in which my butt was kicked repeatedly - M Vallauri put me in the wrong weight class for some reason.  I did go on to wrestle in high school though which had some similar moves.

Yes David, the unfortunate incident involving my stomach was the practice for the French play I was referring to earlier.  Thanks for recalling it in such vivid detail!

I don't want to sound too egocentric (and thanks for the soft exoneration), but I still have the end of a pencil lodged in my hand between my thumb and index finger and I'm not sure where it came from other than that it definitely happened in 4th grade. Marla and I were vicious enemies at the time and now that you recount the story, it's perfectly possible that she stabbed me in the hand. I have the lead still visible to prove it! And let me also add that if anyone deserved it, it was me. I'm sure I teased her into a pencil-stabbing frenzy and suffered the just deserts...

I wasn't the victim, but I did have all sorts of weapons and shanks hidden around that place, just in case.  And in the need for full disclosure, I had figured out a way in my spare time to manipulate one of those scary window grates into a weapon of magnitude that would take out a whole class in seconds.  I wish I could blame Mark, but this one was my own design.

those twins were like frightened fawns -- some boy, i don't remember who, in the hallway between the boys & girls bathroom during 3rd grade, leaped into the air in front of them, landed with a thud while screaming some variation of "BOO!!!"  -- they were so frightened that they threw up in unison -- will anyone fess up?  (the culprit might have even said, 'watch, i'll make them throw up' but i may be mis-remembering this part)

as far as ballet -- i took figure skating w/ john, not ballet, but wasn't jeannot's mom a dance teacher?

i have to run, but i will tell you about the nightmare in provence later -- at least claudia and the girls got to sleep in beds in the main house, the boys were remanded to what was essentially a freezing dusty stone floored barn, with a bucket as a toilet (more on the bucket later as well)

Oh, Peri, I'm sorry you didn't know about Jaret. He died about 3 years
ago after a 4-year battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma, from what I
understand. Dorfman is still friendly with the family and will try to
get in touch with Amiel, J's brother (who was also in my brother's
class at Fleming). I'm looking forward to hearing from Amiel. Jaret
was a professor of East Asian studies, I believe.

Peri (and everyone): If you want, you should be able to look at the
archived messages. In many cases, I have brief bios about various
alums, and in one of my first notes, I mentioned Jaret.

Take care!

If we ever have a reunion I think every single person will be required to show up in Frye boots. I was not allowed to purchase them. I had feet that turned in as a child, and my parents even had me wear god-awful braces as a toddler. My parents were convinced that if I wore Frye boots or wedge sandals or any of the other cool shoes in 7th or 8th grade I would be disabled for life. I pleaded with them, I thought my popularity would soar if I could just get those shoes.... but to no avail.

Okay, everyone.. I hang my head in shame.  I am so sorry, Mark, that I stabbed you in the hand. However, it seems "handy" now that you are in a a hospital. :)  As for my Frye boots... perhaps, I needed the self defense.  Anyone who 'knew' me at the time, knew with what I was dealing.  Goodness knows, Claudia did.  There was no performance of Mame.  That was library fun between Claudia's reading (and re-reading?) of Agatha Christie.  Darryl and I had an affinity for musicals - both Mame and The Sound of Music in particular. I know I won't be in the bios, so I'll fill all of you in a little - I'm married. My daughter is 13.  She just had her bat mitzvah. She's a good girl and student.  I was diagnosed with MS in 1993.  Oh, and I live in Glen Rock, NJ. (25 min. door-to-door to my mother's apartment.)

At that particular time, we had decided that we would not look in the direction of... nor say the word, "church." The most we would say is "ch" to refer to the large building with the cross on it.  The one time I remember vividly, we were walkin with my mother.  She tried to figure it out... but could not.  When I told her about this googlegroup, she asked who was involved, when I mentioned your name, she reminded me of "the church thing." :)

Marla, Grant Philips has already garnered mention in a few earlier notes, tho only for existing (he was in my 2nd grade class). We have no contact info for him at all.

People, if you really want to get the daily version, just let me know, but don't waffle. I'm about to put Evan on it, and Dorfman and Vero are already there, with Marla considering (LMK for sure).

Kelben, I'd forgotten about that thing with the pencils for Jeannot's seat.

Do y'all remember that we had a candy and high-end yummies shop bw 61st and 62nd St and Madison? Charles, or something, was the name. I stole 65 cents' worth of candies from there and felt horribly guilty. My mom suggested that I sneak them back the money in a subsequent visit or two, thereby teaching me a rather terrible lesson in theft, personal responsibility, and so forth.

Kelben, I remember the stickies!

Remember Wacky Packs? I now have a huge collection of them (from a few years ago, when I got them on eBay).

I remember that store Charles and Company vividly. We used to buy pastilles there while waiting for the Madison Avenue bus. I think they hated us in there. We were always so disruptive.

You can actually opt for the digest version on your own, it's easy to set up. I did it at first, but then my impulse control weakened, and I went back to getting the individual emails. Which could explain why I haven't gotten a damn thing done today for work! I just can't resist, it's too much fun.

It's funny you should mention Wacky Packs. We have a good friend who is a comic book illustrator and he managed to get us the most amazing wedding present--a huge wall sized poster with the whole Wacky Pack collection. We have it upstairs, lovingly framed. I also liked Everlasting Gobstoppers. I used to buy them at that candy store in the 80s on Madison (Sweet Temptation maybe?). They would take up my entire mouth and change colors and flavors for at least an hour. This could be why I had eight cavities by fourth grade.

Robin and Hilary Newman (sp). One of them is in my 3 orange photo.

I was in Little Moon as well, I remember going to Chinatown to buy a
costume - ie red satin pajamas - or was that for the King and I? - and
a parasol. Chinatown shops had a particular smell.

I also remember hoping very hard that Mark, Alex and/or Evan would be
in my class because they always cracked me up.

Alex, my mother remembers you (and Tony Barkan) as a 'gentleman' - did
your mother teach you to open doors for the laydeez or help them on
with their coats or something ? That's factors into her memory...

And was anyone else in The Sound of Music, directed by Ms Acker ?
Samantha Gittes was Do, I was Re...

I also remember waiting for my name to be called to get on the
schoolbus at the end of the day, a large-ish room on the second or
third floor, being watched over by some very very scary Scottish
school nurse.

And the busdrivers (a succession of Murrays) - one of whom gave out
goodies - like what you'd get in a crackerjack box - on a Friday.

Grant is now a boxing promoter (says my sister) so it's a good you've
apologised.

Maggie,

I am flattered that I managed to crack you up along with my other two accomplices.  As a matter of fact, I'm taking solace in the fact that my antics were perceived by somebody as fun because a quick cursory review of my old Fleming report cards would indicate that our teachers were not very amused.  I guess I'll have to give my mother the credit for the whole "gentleman" thing.  I guess I have in innate "do-gooder" gene that has finally landed me on the firefighter square.

Sorry it's taken me so long to say hello on this board.  Welcome!  I have so many wonderful memories about you.

And a welcome to you too, John Dorfman and Diana C.!

Alex
