Super scary stuff, but none of the crew were seriously injured.

We subscribed to the Americas cup on NBC Sports Gold and have been really enjoying it . . . Although US not doing well in the Round Robin, after a successful December.

hopefully you can open the pictures!

I really have never done much pay per view but this has been worth it.    I found a 20% off code somewhere.

And I don’t really like the match race format, but at the speeds they go, normal rules of covering don’t apply and there is no way you could have more than two boats on the course.

It has been fun to watch. We had plans to be there because Lisa’s brother lives in Auckland and we would have been on the water.  :-(

Thanks Scott we also subscribed $178 for a good 3 months of terror!

The damage starboard side of their hull in the vicinity of the arm makes me think the shock load of that weighted foil upon landing was transmitted into structures and ruptured the hull.  Going to be a nasty fix on top of a sad record a real test of the backers.  And then there's the question of the driver..

another challenge for the Cup finals:    "American Magic a bit to late to reach out to Gabe"
American tech billionaire Gabe Newell throws support behind Team New Zealand

Interesting that the road NZ is going down with Gabe's software sounds like a simulator. which is going to further integrate the human side of the ramp-up to preparation for race day. I don't know how fast they could do it this time around but watch out, next AC.  I wonder if rules will address sims.  immediate reaction, I hope they rule out simulators.

Scott, Nick - you following F50's?  Simulator

I haven’t been following too closely, but do we know for sure if the leeward running backstay wasn’t eased, and if so, why?

Interesting that Goody was the one advocating for keeping things simple and safe. On page 94 of his book, The RYA Laser Handbook, he says, "if things start to get a bit hairy, then sit tight and try to keep the boat in a straight line... The worst thing you can do is ... alter course as this makes the boat unstable and uncontrollable because of all the forces that are moving."

We call this the "Arrive Alive" technique... ok to sail a suboptimal course if it means keeping the rig in the air and the foils wet.

Yes, foiling ACs are way different than Lasers, but the basic concept of survival in high winds still applies.

And on a different note...

Yeah that was an excellent breakdown of the capsize and why.  It doesn’t surprise me that a tough maneuver like that in difficult conditions would lead to someone missing a critical part of the dance.  That’s usually when things get missed on my boat(s) as well with predictably bad results.

Cool video on the F50 simulator.  Probably a lot more COVID safe than on the water practice with full crew, but maybe not if indoors.  My poor V15 and F18 are sitting neglected this winter.  I’ve been focusing on the SC37 and getting her ready for offshore racing.  We had fun doing a shorthanded casual race last weekend, but I’m mostly looking forward to resuming the proper racing season.
