By default, the Quick Launch bar is not available in Windows 7. To open programs quickly, you can drag the program icons to the taskbar.

However, you can follow the steps in this article to restore the Quick Launch bar and the Show Desktop button as it was in Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows XP.

Now try launching the browser from a shortcut/quick launch icon and see if you get the same results. If the browser launches as intended, all you need to do to get your data back is to go to the same directory listed above, and replace the newly installed User data directory with the one that you saved in the steps above.

This makes it a little tedious when I want to open more instances. Although I can click the mouse wheel on the running instance as a workaround, I'd like something like the old Windows quick launch where the icons remain there and you know exactly where to click to run a given application.

Within this General tab, you can launch the ICA session and also save the settings which will create a specific icon for that connection in the Connection tab. It is also possible to generate an ICA file based on the current displayed settings.

Similar to the Custom ICA Connection settings from Program Neighborhood, you can create, edit, rename and launch connections to different farm, servers and applications. Note: the settings are independent from the other tabs

The name does not need to be enclosed within quotation marks. It is important to write carefully the name of the published application, otherwise the ICA session fails to launch. The published application starts inside a seamless session, using 24-bit color depth. Printers and drives are autocreated, based on the configuration of Citrix Policies. No specific encryption setting can be used.

I've found a few settings in GPO that refer to the quick launch and I've disabled them and logged back in as a standard user to test but none have the result of allowing standard users to add shortcuts. The settings I tested are:

AWS announced the functionality to launch Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) instances running Microsoft Windows Server OS at up to 65% faster than before. Customers can use the faster launching functionality for both stock (AWS managed) and custom Amazon Machine Images (AMIs). For custom AMIs, the launch time is reduced to about 85s from a typical 242s, and for stock AMIs, launch times of about 45s are being achieved. By launching Windows instances faster, the new functionality helps in the timely provisioning of instances at scale, improved SLAs in supporting spiky workloads, and faster response in meeting recovery or fail-over service requests.

In this blog post, we take you through some use cases for this faster launching functionality and provide a detailed step-by-step procedure to enable it on your AMIs through the Amazon EC2 console or AWS Command Line Interface (CLI) or Application Programming Interface (API).

The fast launching of custom Windows AMIs helps meet the requirement for time-sensitive or high-demand instances where launch time is critical for success. The custom Windows AMIs generally run software, such as Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Dynamics CRM, Microsoft Active Directory, or a custom .NET-based application deployed on Windows Server or on Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS). Following are a few use cases where fast launching custom AMIs can be leveraged.

Customers may deploy a disaster recovery plan in backup & restore, Pilot Light or Warm Standby configurations. These deployments extensively use custom windows AMIs with the Microsoft stack of software, such as SharePoint, Dynamics CRM, etc. Fast launch of the EC2 instances at the DR site is important to meet the Recovery Time Objective (RTO). The Windows faster launching feature helps meet the RTO requirement for the deployment strategy.

Many 3rd-party software or AWS partner solutions use an active-passive clustering mechanism to address fail-over requirement. When the active EC2 instance(s) become unavailable, the passive EC2 instance(s) take over and become active. Most of these configurations use custom Windows AMIs that run Microsoft software or AWS partner solutions using Microsoft software. Faster restoration of the passive EC2 instance(s) helps resume the cluster service. The Windows fast launching feature expedites the cluster resumption time.

Pre-provisioned snapshots are used to reduce the EC2 Windows Instance launch time when using optimized Windows AMIs. Amazon EC2 launches an instance using Windows AMI in order to create pre-provisioned snapshots. It completes steps such as Sysprep specialize, Windows Out of Box Experience (OOBE), and rebooting as required. Finally, it stops the instance and creates snapshots, which are then used for the subsequent launches, making the launches faster.

Based on launch frequency configuration, the reserved snapshots automatically replenish when used up. You can increase the launch frequency in advance to address the need for a spike in the number of instances to handle any special event. The launch frequency can be reset back when the requirements return to normal.

Please review the Prerequisites section before enabling this feature and kindly note that the Windows AMI must be created using Sysprep with the shutdown option in order to choose this faster launching feature on the AMI.

Clear the Enable Windows faster launching check box to stop faster launching for EC2 Windows instances and to remove pre-provisioned snapshots (see Figure 6). The AMI will then use the standard launch process for each instance going forward.

Note: Please make sure you are running the latest CLI version (at least 2.4.15) in order for the enable-fast-launch command to show up. You can also use CloudShell from the console to do the same.

To illustrate, let us look at the scenario of enabling faster launching with a default frequency setting of 5 launches per hour. The service pre-launches 5 T instances in the background, taking Windows Server OS through the Sysprep stages in boot process. This step takes around 15 minutes (this varies depending on how busy the zone/region is and how large the AMI is). The runtime of each T instance and the attached EBS volume are billed. Next, the service takes a snapshot corresponding to each instance and stores them. The storage of 5 snapshots in S3 is billed. Each snapshot gets used up when an instance is fast launched from the AMI. So, the cost of S3 storage depends on the duration for which the snapshot is stored before getting used up for a fast launch from the AMI.

1. In the Windows 8 Desktop, launch Windows Explorer, click the View tab on the toolbar, and check the box next to "Hidden items." That will display folders and files that are normally hidden from view.

Firefox Quick launch icon suddenly disappeared. Desktop drag down gets declined. Windows 7. Now need to open FF from its desktop icon only. Tried every which way to get this sigle click icon back and failed. Very curious and puzzling. Recent history and cache cleared. Am considering a re-install. Working with latest FF version. Anyone, please, experienced this strange one and found a successful fix??

Thank you for kindly answering. I have tried all the drag or Cntrl_drg methods. Whatever I do, upon arriving in the quick launch area with the drag, Microsoft, in their wisdom, presents me with a 'prohibited' icon (i.e. like a road sign with a diagonal through the circle, meaning you can't do this). I have uninstalled FF, then re-installed. The quick launch icon which was always present and has disappeared remains disappeared after re-installation. This is a mysterious thing for which I can find no reference on the Internet by googling various search strings. Having tried everything I can think of, I'm stumped. BTW, I don't have a WIN key on my keyboard but this should not be a criterion because I have a bug-less desktop with the FF icon on the desktop. Various other quick launch icons remain present as normal. Please - any further ideas?

That's part of my problem - when FF is open and a temporary FF icon is down in the quick launch area, it doesn't offer me a 'Pin to the Taskbar' option. I wish it were that simple. That's why I'm stumped. I haven't found any way of how to get my quick launch icon back since it disappear some days ago.

Thanks for the kindness of your further advice. Malwarebytes Pro and AVG Pro installed but did a malware scan again nevertheless. No issues found. Checked all FF options, add-ons, plug-ins, disabled wherever not strictly required. Uninstalled any strictly unnecessary program packages in Control Manager. Rebooted. Still no quick launch FF icon, still refuses to offer a pin to taskbar option (prohibited sign shown). I consider myself pretty computer savvy (30 years at the game) but this one is defeating me. Very annoying.

In the end I solved it myself. In case this helps anyone else - was stupidly simple but solved by luck. I had used a 3rd party software to remove the 'arrow' attached to every desktop icon denoting a short cut. Upon deactivating this option and re-establishing the hated arrows, FF icon allowed itself to be dragged and stay down in the quick launch area. Hope this helps someone else.

If you often use both the Microsoft Office 365 and Azure Management Portals, and use them with several different tenants, credentials, and subscriptions, it helps to quickly launch a web browser in private mode to those two portals. The private mode segregates the credentials across tenants and subscriptions.

In Alfred, we can disable the hotkeys for Spotlight and use Command + Space to launch Alfred. In Numi, we can map the hotkey to Option + Space to launch Numi. Both can be launched wherever, even if another application is in full screen.

And therefore, I would like to see if Obsidian has this option to quickly launch as some kind of popup windows, using hotkeys such as Control + Space to let me type a few lines of note and press again to close it, just like how I use Numi with Option + Space
