The Flatcar Alpha release scheduled for the week of 2021-04-26 will no longer include rkt and kubelet-wrapper (which depends on rkt)

Rkt had a great run - pioneering a number of modern container runtime features and helping to establish a common standard - but has been deprecated by upstream quite a while ago. We continued maintaining and shipping legacy rkt for some time for compatibility reasons, but will retire the runtime with our upcoming Alpha release.

Rkt usage has declined since its upstream deprecation and it is not very likely that your workload is affected by the change. However, if you’re still using rkt or kubelet-wrapper, or if you’re unsure whether you do, please be prepared to test your workloads in a non-production environment with the Alpha release we’ll release in the week of 26 April.

If you are a Flatcar Subscription customer of Kinvolk and need advice on the migration from rkt to other container runtimes, please contact your customer success manager with any questions.

Best regards,
The Flatcar Container Linux team at Kinvolk
