I really like guard11 and prisoner 12 & 13. Not feeling Etienne or
the Old Man (Gael).

Etienne reads very noble, bluntly noble. I pictured he would be more
modest in his appearance and his nobility would come out in his
personality and dialogue. The first two are pretty good as far as
clothes go, maybe some more patches or tears. I think that long hair
and robes are a bad idea, because we would then need to animate all of
that, and that would be a bitch. I think also, his shoes should be
the shorter kind, not the laced-up-to-the-knee kind (whatever you call
that).

Gael feels like an evil wizard. I pictured him like santa clause or
budda - not the way he looks necessarily, but the feeling you get when
u see him. A kind spirit, someone who seems always in control of
their emotions. Spiritually strong, caring and kind. Does that make
sense?

I think it would be cool if one of the prisoners had one shoe on, like
it fell off on the way and the guards just went "fuck it, keep
moving". Having a bit of a limp would give him more character.

I'm totally cool with the art style, unless others feel different.

Opinions, Comments, Responses?

I like the start of this. I think our baseline is good to start moving
forward. Now, let's try to revise what we have here, and make some new
sketches for the ones we think are needed.

Etienne:
I like #5 the best.

- The body type is what I expect: Not too strong, but not incredibly
week.
- I like the feel of the harp, but for this story we can lose it :).
- I think the hair is perfect, but I'm flexable as to what Gera and
Chris think.
- I like the shirt, and rope-belt.
- The pants and shoes need to be redone.

Etienne is a Philosophy student. From the time period, that would mean
that regardless of his background, he is poor. The clothing depicted
in the sketch looks to reference someone of a higher wealth and class
status, seemingly someone that would be suitable to attend the
vicinity of a King's court. I think that more plain looking pants and
shoes would completely change the appearance into more of what we
would expect. For the pants, think of something non-fitting, baggy.
The material would be loosely cut and sewn together with thread and
needle. The shoes, more of an animal skin/leather with thick sewn
bindings. Keep in mind, our character should be fit for a lot of
activity such as running.

Gaeil:
The sketches seem more like the crazy/evil wizard type. I actually
think #4, of youngman, is more what I am seeing for Gaeil, but an old
man. I like the idea of high boots on him, but more for traveler's fit
(not going for pointy toes again). The pants could be ok, preferably a
little looser, depending on what others think.

Qualities of Gaeil:
- Kind hearted, good. I see round, kind eyes.
- Firm, Strong in Conviction. Maybe a strong jaw line.
- Contemplater of life, thinker. Beard, but not too long. The hair in
#4 I like.

I like the other characters, especially the Guards. The one with the
Spade looking symbol, maybe we could rework the symbol into something
unique instead. Otherwise, I like these characters.

I really love Gael-18. In the sketch, he looks like he has really bad
cross eye (intentional?). I really dig that. I would not mind that
at all. I think the juxtaposition of his wise man personality and
goofy look can be very entertaining. He can behave and speak normal
and the audience will take him seriously, but with a undertone of
humor that we can get from funny expressions. I knew a guy in the
past, he was a smart guy and very serious, but he had this weird
deformity - his eyes could not rotate in their sockets. It was very
entertaining to talk to him. Our conversations would be absolutely
normal, but I would always observe him turning his head like a
rooster, 'cuz he had to, to look around. It was not a bad thing, more
of a study on my end, but it definitely made him a character in my
eyes. Except, in our design, if you guys like that idea, I'd rather
his eyes would be pointing away from each other. Cross eye makes the
character seem shy, and I was picturing Gael to be a relatively
outspoken person, and the split eye (or whatever you call that) would
not convey that feeling. It would just be... goofy. Like a bulldog.
What do you guys think?

I also would like to put in a vote for guard-11 and guard-16. I think
guard-11 should have a sword, but otherwise I really like them both.
Another reason for that is that they are very similar in build and
outfits. We can just have a texture swap off of a single mesh (with
minor modifications), same rig 'n all. Time saver!!

I'm still not feeling Etienne. Etienne-19 is a nice character, as in
- the face and build (I really like his facial expression and
structure; those sad puppy eyes that have seen too much sorrow) but
his outfit still looks too neat to me. He should have some tears or
patches on his clothes. Way too clean. Maybe a couple of layers,
like an undershirt with something on top? His belt should be a worn
rope, maybe even ripped and retied in some places. In the front he
would just tie it in a knot. I think a pouch that looks more like a
coin bag than a fanny pack would work better as well.

I also want to put in the vote for prisoner 12 & 13. I'm really happy
with their designs, unless others have some requests.

Gera.

P.S. Andrei, if you want, after we lock down the designs, I can do
the basic color templates for the characters. It will be faster and
cheaper in photoshop than with paints. Once we get the feel for the
color scheme, you can do a detailed drawings with paints. What do you
think?

I will make an attempt at the emblems for the warring clans. The
guards would need one and I think the prisoners should have another
item that they wear with their emblem. Similar to tar and feathers,
or a branding, or the arm bands that the Jews had to wear for ID in
WWII. They will not play a direct role in the demo, but further down
the road, bystanders could pelt them with rotten fruit and curse them
as they are lead through the streets, for example. Sorry for getting
ahead of the project, but I like to plant some roots up ahead, so it
will be easier to intertwine if it gets produced.

I like the two prisoners. If the rest of you are OK with it, I say
"golden". The guards should be colored brighter. They usually stand
out to identify each other on the battlefield and to attract attention
so common folk get out of the way.

I also like Gael. You should keep the clothes from the previous one,
but his facial features are good by me. Well, i kind of like the
scruffy beard of the previous, but otherwise great.

Etienne still needs a rework. How about you just take the head from
"youngfellow-5" and put it on the body of Etienne-19. He looks a bit
stupid in the face right now, like he's not all there. Maybe him mom
dropped him? ahahaha... sorry.

Thoughts?

I like the prisoners and guards. As Gera said, the colors on the
guards could use some work. I recommend no dark colored shirts. Mixes
of white and black, and bright red were more common for guards and
knights back then.

I like Gael 21, I think that is a good direction.

I agree with Gera about Etienne, moving the head from 5 to 19. Also,
we were discussing that the hero needs some way to stand out a bit. A
vest over the shirt would be nice. Also, a carry bag with a shoulder
strap, all made of a rough leather, to represent the inventory.

Good Work!

My only concern with that shoulder bag is that Gael has one as
well. Would that be a little bland?

I'm thinking something bigger than Gael's. Something that is more
viewable from the side/back of the character. In any case, it is my
only idea for a distinguishable prop for the main character, and would
be more important prop than Gael's.

Got new images up. I'm kinda digging the blue/green theme. Removed
the old ones, they were very disorganized, but I still have them on
the HD, if u want them back - let me know.

I did some "Ass Creed"-ing today, and the red/white theme is
dominating that game. I'm concerned being seen as a stylistic knock
off of that, with the similar setting and all. Let me know.

Just call out numbers off the files if you want me to combine some of
them from different paint overs.

For the soldier colors, I like #s 1, 5, and 11. And I wouldn't be going with the mindset that you would be ripping off another game. This is based off of source material, they just used a similar approach. I'm not sure about Green, I'll think about it some more (although green is my fav color).

I did a little more of the Gael and Etienne drawings.I 'm trying to
get a feel of them by drawing characters in the different poses. There
is more to come very soon.I like brown and green colors better,it
looks more legit ,the guards are just some foot soldiers not the
knights or anything if you want you can get them a logo on the chest
with a bright color.

Well, it's not about source material per se, Just as an example,
"deep impact" came out 2 weeks after "armageddon" and was totally
overshadowed by it, even though the latter one was a more generic,
standard fare, with a blockbuster cast (well, I also heard how JJ
Adams came up with that script, while taking my screenwriting class,
so that adds to it for me). Another thing is that we are trying to
reference the era, but not copy it. Those color schemes will really
lock it down for players... they will know exactly where it is set,
even though we rather not have direct correlation. Most people know
of the crusaders and would recognize their color palette.

As far as Andrei's comment - they do belong to the greater army, so
they would probably have the bright uniforms, although we can really
dirty it up as we texture the models.

Green is also my favorite color, but I think from the big color
studies (11, and 16) that 16 is a better choice. The green's look
nice, but in a background with any green in it, the guard might get
washed out and won't stand out enough. Guard 11b number 4 is pretty
nice as well (red one). As far as ripping off, I think we're fine. A
wizard wearing a purple cloak isn't ripping off a particular game,
it's just an accepted color. (purple being associated with power,
etc.) In that way, I think red is a suitable color for a soldier.

I'm liking the direction Gael is moving toward, however not totally
accepting Etienne. I think that he looks a little too unintelligent.
This is mostly due to his half closed eyes and gaping open mouth.
Since this is a game with no player outfit customization, i think it's
important that as much as he should look like a peasant, there should
also be something that really stands out with him, he is after all the
player character. Something unique to him that could perhaps tie into
the story. Something important to him that he carries around. As for
his face I feel it needs a little bit more defined features, he is
starting to feel generic. Maybe looking at random photos of a bunch of
people will help with that. hope this helps and makes sense!

Yes Tyler, both of the guards are in the game, we are just working
out the colors for them. so it's 11-10 or 16-5. Cheers!

I'm sorry, I must have misread up above. I'm not in favor of the
earthy tones on guards. Historically, guards would wear outfits that
are a mix of white or black and a primary color. Of course, the
'white' will be very dirty, and look more off-white. I like the idea
of green, now that I have sat on it for a while.

I really like Etienne26. From Tyler's post, I think we can just make
different expressions for him to suit the character. Etienne is
curious, adept, fairly witty, yet unexperienced. I think what we have
right now is great! I can't wait to see these characters in 3d.
