Just curiosity from my side, why javascript? Obvious significant
slower and a lot browser compatibility issues as far as I noticed in
the protovis forum (which put my off learning protovis)

As for speed. Chrome precompiles javascript, and it runs fast that actionscript for some things. Also, I want it to work on the iPhone.

thanks for the further clarifications. I would highly appreciate if
you post about your experiences with protovis here at some point,
particular your opinion about the two different approaches choosen for
the case you know flare also. (I was also considering trying to port
protovis to AS3 yet haven't made any steps. The lines of codes in
protovis seem to be significant less)
Chrome speed by precompiling sounds great.
