The creators of Flare did just that. http://vis.stanford.edu/protovis/

As far as I see not really a port, actually a different structural
approach (very interesting one) - yet with similar possibilities. In
the protovis forum I saw once a post mentioning that Jeff even started
to port protovis to AS3. (not finished it as far as I understood)

Just curiosity from my side, why javascript? Obvious significant
slower and a lot browser compatibility issues as far as I noticed in
the protovis forum (which put my off learning protovis)

ps
just a quick note from my side, not much online these days so maybe no
quick response on further replies

Wow! Nice. Email groups ARE good for something. Though looking at it, I wanted to do it with the canvas element.

As for speed. Chrome precompiles javascript, and it runs fast that actionscript for some things. Also, I want it to work on the iPhone.

Hi Patrick,

thanks for the further clarifications. I would highly appreciate if
you post about your experiences with protovis here at some point,
particular your opinion about the two different approaches choosen for
the case you know flare also. (I was also considering trying to port
protovis to AS3 yet haven't made any steps. The lines of codes in
protovis seem to be significant less)

Chrome speed by precompiling sounds great.
