Is Amendment 8, purposely misnamed the Religious
Freedom Amendment, a “raw grab for taxpayer’s millions,” as noted in the
Sun Sentinel?
Sen.
Thad Altman (R-Viera), the main Florida Senate sponsor of Amendment 8,
will appear with George Griffin of the ACLU on Oct. 13 to debate their
opposing views of Amendment 8, the controversial Florida Religious
Freedom Amendment, which is on the ballot Nov. 6. The League of Women
Voters will moderate the Saturday morning forum at the United Church of
Christ, 203 Washington Street in New Smyrna Beach, beginning at 10 a.m.

Conflicting opinions about the amendment’s intentions and possible
effects have swirled through Florida newspapers and media, but one thing
is certain: the amendment, if passed, would alter Article I, Section 3
of the Florida Constitution, which deals with “Religious Freedom,”
adding a sentence which states, “No individual or entity may be
discriminated against or barred from receiving funding on the basis of
religious identity or belief,” and deleting prohibitive current language
which says, “No revenue of the state or any political subdivision or
agency thereof shall ever be taken from the public treasury directly or
indirectly in aid of any church, sect, or religious denomination or in
aid of any sectarian institution.”
