martin-hoodie-gun-targets-reportedly-sell-out/1#.T62r6-hSRnc

Shooting targets featuring Trayvon Martin's hooded sweatshirt were sold on
a gun auction site "to make money off the controversy," the unidentified
seller told Orlando TV station WKMG.

The paper targets do not show Trayvon's face but include a box of Skittles
and a beverage, which the 17-year-old bought before being shot and killed
in February during a confrontation with George Zimmerman in Sanford, Fla.

Two unidentified Florida gun dealers bought some targets, the seller said
in an email exchange. "I sold out in 2 days," the seller wrote, without
revealing the quantity.

The exchange occurred before a WKMG reporter identified himself as a
journalist.

The seller's advertisement stated, "[We] support Zimmerman and believe he
is innocent and that he shot a thug." The ad has been taken down.

The station does not identify the "popular firearms auction website" and
says it has not been able to determine the identify of the seller.

Before the reporter identified himself, the seller said targets were still
available, afterward saying they would no longer be sold, the station
writes. The targets cost $8, plus $7.50 shipping.

An attorney for Trayvon's family called the target "disgusting."

"It's a sad certain segment of our society that would think you could make
a profit off the killing of a teenage boy," said Natale Jackson.

Zimmerman's attorney denounced the targets as "hate-mongering."

"This is the highest level of disgust and the lowest level of civility,"
said Mark O'Mara. "It's this type of hatred -- that's what this is, it's
hate-mongering -- that's going to make it more difficult to try this
case."

Zimmerman is being tried for second-degree murder. He is free on bond.

Your boy Obama likes holding people in GitMo with no charges
while letting hemosexuals pending discharge "protect" them.
What do you suppose is happening there?

No, it's affirmative action. Up to now, the only paper targets of thugs I've seen featured burly

Yes, he is correct. I've spent years on firing ranges because I have to
maintain qualifications for my job, and every single paper human target
that I've ever seen are either silhouettes or white guys.

Even the zombie targets are white zombies.

Yep. Printed firearms targets depicting "realistic" images of armed or
menacing suspects almost invariably depict Caucasians, or at least none
of many versions I've seen have never depicted any other race. I
suppose the obvious reason is that neither the manufacturers nor the
institutional customers who buy in quantity (law enforcement agencies,
mainly) don't want to risk accusations of racism. A photograph or video
of a firing line of white police officers training to shoot at black
men, using them as targets, is not an image any police chief would want
the public to see.

On the other hand, there is an untapped market there. I suppose targets
featuring exaggeratedly racist and stereotypical images of black people,
the darker skinned and thicker lipped the better, dressed in an
outlandish version of "ghetto" urban style, maybe with one arm around
the throat of a pretty little white girl and the other holding holding a
gun to her head, would be tremendously popular with a certain segment of
the shooting public. You know, racists. They would doubtless enjoy
blazing away at such targets, and derive great satisfaction from that
bit of simulated wish fulfillment.

more "shoot'n'see" type targets to spare the ol' eyeballs. Shooting at

How many feet above the target does a bore sighted

To further clarify:

Rifles are not rated in feet per second. They are described by caliber,
barrel length and action type.

Specific cartridges can travel at 1000 fps depending on bullet weight,
bullet profile, charge type and weight, length of barrel, etc.

And is 1000 fps at the muzzle, mid trajectory or terminal? The velocity of
a bullet decreases the longer it is flight. This varies by bullet weight
and the ballistic coefficient of the projectile. Some complicated formulas
describe this but nowadays there are dedicated calculating devices with the
equations and data built in.

Is there a head wind or a cross wind? What is the temperature?

2,000 feet, roughly 666.6 yards, 2 feet amd 1.2 inches is a fairly long
shot that only a smallish percentage of shooters could pull off. Or would
even try. Or even have a place to try it.

Furthermore boresight is really more of a verb, it's what you do to sight
in a firearm. A "boresighter" is a device you use to boresight your
firearm. The term I beleive you meant was "zeroed" as in the point at which
a projectile will hit the target at the precise place that the sights are
set for no holdover or holdunder. Of course zero is at whatever range you
want it set at. It can vary, typically from 25 years to 275 yards depending
on the gun, cartridge and it's intended use.

I beleive that some air guns are rated in fps but they have fixed
projectile types: ,177 caliber BBS, .177 or .22 pellets and sometimes
darts. None of which has a prayer of reaching 2000 feet under most
circumstances, not reliably.

You wouldn't look quite so stupid if you confined yourself to posting on
those topics on which you had some background. But then you would never
post.

How cruel can you be?????

Personally I don't care what they use for targets. If people can't grasp the
difference between a figure on paper and someone in real life...then IMO
they are the ones with a problem.
<liberaltalk = /on>

Yea, it's wrong. We should start a national protest against any use of these
targets. We need to get the ACLU to get an injunction to halt all sales for
stereotyping and profiling. Then we should work on organizing a boycott of
this business and all who buy their products. Finally we can sit around the
camp firing making Smores and singing Kum Ba Ya.

Bore sighted at what range?

What bullet caliber?

What bullet weight?

What bullet drag coefficient?

What altitude?

What spin rate?

What temperature?

What relative humidity?

What specific bullet design?

What sort of rifling?

All these factors, and more figure into such a calculation.

As such your question as stated is indeterminate since it lacks the details
necessary for a solution.

I suggest you simply go back to trying to push your illusionary money and
leave gun matters to people who know something about them.

Ok...then given that information the amount you have to hold above your
target that is 2000 feet down range would be between zero and infinity
depending upon the specific projectile and conditions that exist at the time
of the shooting.

IOW, the solution is indeterminate.

Oh, and I could prove both ends of that extreme and thus everything in
between would be valid as well.

See what I mean about indeterminate?

The 'answer' is so vast as to be meaningless.

Power source would seem to me, to be less relevant. 1000 fps is
1,000 lf/sec is 681.1 mph.. Give or take.

All things considered, I'd say that it would depend on the
definition of "foot" that is uses. Standard, survey, metric, or
customary? So I'd say - about that much. Maybe more.

Bullet weight doesn't matter (much) :-)

Agreed, but external ballistics would be critical to figuring your point of
aim to obtain a hit on a target 2000 feet down range.

For example. You have BB guns that deliver 1000 fps muzzle velocities...but
guess what... a BB at that speed isn't going to even get to 2000 feet under
normal conditions across level ground.

Nope, what emoron is asking is a simplistic grade school gravity problem
where all other real world factors are ignored except for gravity.

I can only assume this is because emoron never got past grade school math.

depending upon the specific projectile and conditions that exist at the time
of the shooting."

If you don't like the answer then give me some additional parameters so I
can narrow down the solution to something less....broad.

Can't expect a precise answer with only a few of the needed conditions being
defined.

It probably fires around 350-500 fps. Depending on the projectile
type..it might...might go 1500 feet..if fired at a 47.5 degree upwards
angle (most effective angle for long distance flight +/-)

You do know that Im a published author on interior and exterior
ballistics..right?

Id be more than happy to help you out with some numbers if you give me
the data I need to do the computations.

Exterior ballistics is indeed a science. Its been well researched for
400 yrs and many many breakthrus have been made in the last 150 yrs.

But I must have at minimum:

Velocity at the muzzle
Bullet weight
Type of bullet
Range desired data on

I can give you a "general" approximation of where and when the round
will be at any point in its flight with that data

Bullet weight matters at least 50% of the equation, as velocity is aprox
the other 50%. Bullet nose (meplat), base configuration are all critical
and changing data points that have serious impacts in the actual flight
of a projectile..but they can be "approximated"..which means the farther
out your go..the more "error" will be added.
>
> I think a scope would be needed at

Its only 666.6 yards. Shrug..its not all that far.

And most rifle bullets travel at minimum...(not counting rimfires of
course)...2500 fps. The M16 round travels aprox 3750 fps...but is fairly
light so it has much less range than does say..a 168gr boattail from a
.308 fired at 2750fps.

Here..let me demonstrate...

Those are the limits of the solution. From a simple no deflection shot at
zero gravity in a vacuum (and no I don't mean just free fall)...to being
beyond the range the projectile can travel in those conditions.

After all....look at the conditions set when I answered.

Any type of projectile, through any medium from a perfect vacuum to the
strongest solid object, in any gravitational condition, with any sort of
external ballistics from perfect to a stabilized pie pan (ie maximum frontal
area producing maximum drag for the weight).

With that range of conditions...what can the answer be except zero to
infinity?
