do you think its from sun burn?
I do water them.. then they sit out in the
sun all day in st petersburg.. I am thinking
the droplets of water are acting like an magnafying
glass? The dark brown marks are on the top of the
tomato..

On another note.. my corn has produced what is looking like some
good sweet corn.. I got about another month left.. just in time for
the 4th of July.

My radishes are starting to get plump.. not just a root anymore..

I am not sure about the lettuce or cabbage.. I am hopeing they grow
good..
but I am worried about them getting too dry during the day.
I might need a mister?

Tomatoes love heat/sun. I am originally from KY where I used to be able to
grow wonderful tomatoes. I haven't had any luck at all with them since I
moved down here - I even tried growing them in large containers with good
soil because I thought that was the problem.

There are so many durned bugs and birds eating on them - that was the
problem I had. I've had so many failures with tomatoes since moving down
here that I just quit trying.

As for the lettuce (I'm not sure about cabbage), I only know about leaf
lettuce - and that is a cold weather plant like broccoli, peas, etc - we
always started them early back home. Tomatoes would live if you planted
them earlier but they wouldn't grow/thrive until it got hot.

Hi, the first time I grew tomatoes they were fantastic. But since then
its been really hard so I have done alot of searching online. I found
out that you should only water them at the base of the root only, give
them a good soak at least once a week. If you are going to spray the
leaves and the fruit do it early in the morning or in the evening when
the sun goes down. If there is not enough foilage to help protect the
fruit from the sun I would find some source of shade so they are
exposed all day. Keep trying, you'll find the answers. Mary

Thanks Mary.. I do believe the sun is burning them from the droplets
of water..
but i have a few bugs that will eat thru a few of them.. but I tell
ya.. my two plants
are going nutzo.. so I have plenty of tomatos.. three or four every
few days...
I am having great luck with them.. and if a few go to the bugs.. or
birds.. ( i don't see any bird problems at all, so i think its bugs..
and sunburn affecting them).

ahh.. come on.. mine are doing absolutly wonderful... so you can grow
them..
I just dug right in my yard.. went out to home depot.. got two plants
about 8 inches
tall in a pint container.. I bought a bag of time released
fertilizer for tomato and veggie
plants.. I dug a hole.. and put a left over fish body after I took
the meat off.. and put that in the hole.. added about an inch of soil
on top of the fish.. then set the plant on top of that... watered it
real good.. packed the soil firmly.. added the time released
nutrients..
staked them up with a piece of wood.. and put a tomato cage around
it.. I have vines
that are over 8 feet long. I thought they wouldn't grow in the
heat.. or the sandy soil..
but I was wrong. The plants get afternoon shade.. and morning sun..
from.. about 8:30am- 2:30 pm... then the sun hits them late in the
evening.. just before sunset.
Keep on trying.. these are great tomatos.. I am growing cherry tomatos
and roma tomatos.

I am testing the leaf lettuce.. the rest I am saving for the cooler
temp garden in the fall and winter.

Thanks, maybe I will give it another try. I have only tried beefsteak since
I moved down here.
