Have you ever wondered why algae in the central air conditioning system
is big news in Florida and almost unheard-of in most other states?
There is a very simple reason, and it has nothing to do with climate.

Almost everywhere else, the air handler is located on the other side of
the wall from the air-intake register, while in Florida air handlers
typically hang on the outside of houses and condos, with long intake
ducts that have lots of nooks, crannies, and just plain open space for
algae and other forms of truffles to grow. Get rid of the long intake
duct and you are rid of the algae and mould problems. The rest is just
vacuuming out the cooling coil.
