Pompano postpones Enron vote
JP Bender
Pompano Beach city commissioners voted 3-2 last night to put off until May 8 the request
by Texas-based Enron Energy Co. to rezone 28 acres for a power plant.
Hostile demonstrators packed the room and expressed a distrust of Enron. They said they
didn't believe the company's promise that the plant would operate only at peak hours.
Commissioners heard an impassioned plea by Enron's local attorney Thomas Johnston.
"We're here tonight to present an opportunity to Pompano Beach," he began, while the
overwhelmingly anti-plant audience began laughing.
The meeting lasted until 2 a.m. Most of the crowd tired and went home, and then
commissioners voted.
A day earlier, commissioners voted 4-1 not to delay the vote in response to angry
protesters who wanted their objections heard.
Before the meeting, Enron spokesman Eric Thode said the company would decide later
whether to go to court if it lost the vote.
